Mandalay is the second-largest city and the last royal capital of Burma. When it was founded in 1857, the royal city was officially named Yadanabon, the Burmese version of "(city) full of gems". Mandalay is Burma's cultural and religious center of Buddhism, having numerous monasteries and more than 700 pagodas. "Mandalay" is a famous poem by Rudyard Kipling that was first published in the collection Barrack-Room Ballads, and Other Verses, the first series, published in 1892. The poem colourfully illustrates the nostalgia and longing of a soldier of the British Empire for Asia's exoticism and generally for the countries and cultures located "East of Suez", as compared to the cold, damp and foggy climates and to the social disciplines and conventions of the UK and Northern Europe. Kuthodaw Pagoda (literally Royal Merit, and formally titled Mahalawka Marazein) is a Buddhist stupa that contains the world's largest book. It lies at the foot of Mandalay Hill and was built during the reign of King Mindon. The stupa itself, which is gilded above its terraces, is 188 feet (57 m) high, and is modelled after the Shwezigon Pagoda at Nyaung-U near Bagan.

The dominant natural feature of Mandalay is its 790 ft (240 m) Mandalay Hill, which towers above the city and the flat plain below. Virtually all visitors and pilgrims to Mandalay either climb the 1,729 steps of the covered southern stairway with its magnificent guardian chinthe (half-lion, half-dragon) at the entry, use stairways on the other side’s or use easier means and take the escalator, cars or buses to the top. The pagoda and its ancillary pavilion are located near the top of Mandalay Hill, the holy hill from which the Buddha reportedly predicted that a great religious city would emerge at its base.

The Shwe In Bin Kyaung is acclaimed as one of the most attractive monasteries in Mandalay. This large and elegant traditional teak building was constructed by a wealthy Chinese jade merchant in 1895 to please his devoted Burmese wife. The carving is very fine in detail, and the scenes on the inside show courtly and daily life. Its tiered roof is covered in exquisite carvings, which also are featured inside the monastery.
