Title: The MagmaticallyTriggered Slow Earthquake at Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii

1
The MagmaticallyTriggered Slow Earthquake at
Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii
  • By Dani Rosengrant

2
Kilauea Volcano
  • Mt. Kilauea is located on the big island of
    Hawaii
  • It is the youngest volcano on the big island and
    has its own magma-plumbing system
  • It is 1,277 meters/4,190 feet above sea level
  • Mt. Kilauea is a shield volcanoits eruptions
    are slow and peaceful.
  • It began erupting in 1983 and since then has
    erupted about 61 times

3
What created the volcano?
4
Why was there an earthquake?
  • There was a shift of magma beneath the surface.
  • Magma escaped from a reservoir beneath the summit
and flowed into a dike in the east rift zone.
  • This extended the rift zone by almost 1 meter.
  • The new dike formation caused what scientists
    call a slow earthquake

5
What exactly is a slow earthquake?
  • Occurs when a fault ruptures too slowly to create
any tremors that can be felt.
  • Slow earthquakes have occurred periodically
    around Kilauea before.
  • These eruptions typically have a magnitude of
approx. 5.5-5.7 on the richter scale.

6
Why this is important
  • Slow earthquakes are a recent scientific
discovery because they are very difficult to
detect and have gone unnoticed for centuries.
  • Due to breakthroughs in earthquake detection
technology researchers have been able to study
them. However, these new developments have only
taken place over the past 10 or so years.
  • Scientists are still uncertain about their
relation to other earthquakes, however they
believe that by understanding how they are
generated and triggered researchers can better
    understand how predictable earthquakes are.
  • They also believe that the slow earthquake at
Kilauea is an example of how magmatismand
    earthquake faulting can be connected
