2
Objectives
  • Educate the audience on the disease diabetes
  • Go over the different types, symptoms,
    treatments, etc.
  • Prevention of the disease

3
What is Diabetes?
  • Diabetes is a chronic deficiency of insulin or a
case in which insulin does not work properly
    within the body
  • There are three common forms of diabetes
  • Diabetes can affect anyone especially those who
    are genetically predisposed.
  • The metabolism of glucose or the lack thereof
plays a very important role in the activity of
    all types of diabetes

4
Type I Diabetes
  • Type I diabetes typically only effects children
and young adults which is why it was previously
    known as juvenile diabetes
  • The body does not produce insulin
  • Requires the use of supplemental insulin

5
Type II Diabetes
  • This would be the most common type of diabetes
  • This form of the disease is slightly different
from type I in that the body still produces some
insulin but not enough for normal metabolic
    processes
  • This type of diabetes can be avoided and occurs
    among adults

6
Gestational Diabetes
  • About 4 of all women that become pregnant can be
    affected by Gestational Diabetes
  • Many women who have gestational diabetes go on to
develop type II diabetes in later years
  • Very little is known about the cause of this type
    of diabetes
  • Gestational diabetes often begins when your body
is not able to make or use all the insulin it
    needs for pregnancy
  • Poor management of this type of diabetes can have
a major effect on the health of the baby

7
Some Differences?
  • Type II diabetes can be prevented while type I
    diabetes cannot
  • Hypoglycemia is common with type I, but not with
    type II
  • Symptoms for type II generally occur in
adulthood, while type I symptoms occur in
    childhood/young adulthood

8
Symptoms / Clinical Manifestations
  • The symptoms of diabetes vary from patient to
patient symptoms range from mild to more obvious
  • More obvious symptoms include being sluggish and
very tired all of the time.
  • Also, almost constant thirst, frequent urination,
hunger, and a greater sense of irritability.

9
Diagnoses
  • If symptoms are present, tests can be used to
    confirm the disease
  • There are multiple tests that can be used
  • FPG (fasting plasma glucose test)
  • OGTT (oral glucose tolerance test)
  • Hemoglobin A1C
  • Urinalysis for ketones

10
Treatment
  • Good metabolic control derives positive outcomes
    with diabetics
  • Includes use of insulin and other medications to
control glucose levels within the body
  • Changing ones diet and increasing physical
activity is a great way to keep the disease under
    control
  • Those that have been diagnose with pre-diabetes
can also expect to benefit from a good diet and
    exercise program

11
Complications w/ Diabetes
  • Having any type of diabetes can cause many other
    serious health problems
  • Heart disease
  • Blindness
  • Nerve damage
  • Leads to amputation
  • Organ damage
  • Such as with the kidney(s)
  • The rates of complications are similar in all
    ethnicities
  • Great control of your situation is key in every
    case.
  • It is very important for those with diabetes to
learn as much as possible in order to prevent
    complications from occurring

12
Disease Prevention
  • It is very important that the community knows
that diabetes is something that can be prevented
  • Some preventative measures include
  • Regular exercise
  • Healthy eating habits
  • Another avenue of prevention includes taking a
    look (testing) high-risk individuals and
educating them on some of the risks of diabetes
  • Most importantly is developing a completely (or
    almost completely) healthy lifestyle

13
Summary
  • In this presentation we have discussed
  • Some basic background information on diabetes
  • Types of diabetes, symptoms, treatment,
    complications, etc.
  • And important information on prevention
