The Piazza del Duomo ("Cathedral Square") is a wide, walled area at the heart of the city of Pisa, Tuscany, Italy, recognized as one of the main centers for medieval art in the world. It is otherwise known as Piazza dei Miracoli ("Square of Miracles"). This name was created by the Italian writer and poet Gabriele d'Annunzio. Often people tend to mistake the term with Campo dei Miracoli ("Field of Miracles"). This one is a fictional magical field in the book Pinocchio, where a gold coin seed will grow a money tree. The heart of the Piazza del Duomo is, obviously, the Duomo, the medieval cathedral, entitled to Santa Maria Assunta (St. Mary of the Assumption). This is a five-naved cathedral with a three-naved transept. The church is known also as the Primatial, the archbishop of Pisa being a Primate since 1092
Ravello is a town situated above the Amalfi Coast in the province of Salerno, southern Italy, with approximately 2,500 inhabitants. Ravello inspired many famous composers including Richard Wagner, Edvard Grieg, Bernstein Toscanini, – artists such as Escher, Mirò – writers such as Ruskin, Boccaccio, D H Lawrence. Built in the 11th century with support from the Rufolo family, the Duomo is a combination of Baroque and Romanesque styles. Dedicated to St. Pantaleone, the church has undergone extensive modifications and restorations over the past 900 years. The Duomo’s shining white façade dates back to the last major restoration in 1931. The Duomo’s bell tower, which dates back to the 13th century, shows Moorish and Byzantine influence
Amalfi is the main town of the coast on which it is located, named Costiera Amalfitana (Amalfi Coast), and is today an important tourist destination together with other towns on the same coast, such as Positano, Ravello and others. Amalfi is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. At the top of a staircase, Saint Andrew's Cathedral (Duomo) overlooks the Piazza Duomo, the heart of Amalfi. The cathedral dates back to the 11th century; its interior is adorned in the late Baroque style with a nave and two aisles divided by 20 columns. The façade of the cathedral is Byzantine in style and is adorned with various paintings of saints, including a large fresco of Saint Andrew.
Salerno is a city in Campania (southwestern Italy) and is the capital of the province of the same name. Salerno is located on the Gulf of Salerno on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Today Salerno is an important cultural centre in Campania and Italy. The St. Matthew Cathedral founded by Roberto the Guiscard and consecrated by Pope Gregory VII, was officially opened in March 1084. The present structure dates back to the earthquake of 5th June 1688, when it was completely rebuilt. The main entrance has been altered and the courtyard is surrounded by a covered walkway supported by twenty eight plain columns with arches and a series of Roman tombs around the walls. On the southern side of the cathedral stands the bell tower which dates back to XII century.
The Cathedral of Siena (Italian: Duomo di Siena), dedicated from its earliest days as a Roman Catholic Marian church and now to Santa Maria Assunta (Most Holy Mary of Assumption), is a medieval church in Siena, central Italy. The cathedral itself was originally designed and completed between 1215 and 1263 on the site of an earlier structure. It has the form of a Latin cross with a slightly projecting transept, a dome and a bell tower. The dome rises from a hexagonal base with supporting columns. The lantern atop the dome was added by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The nave is separated from the two aisles by semicircular arches. The exterior and interior are constructed of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, with addition of red marble on the façade. Black and white are the symbolic colors of Siena, etiologically linked to black and white horses of the legendary city's founders, Senius and Aschius.

Set in the beautiful mountainous northwest corner of Tuscany, the medieval city of Barga is situated on a spur overlooking the mid-Serchio River Valley. Barga, in its heyday, was a stronghold of The Medici's Florence. Against the often fiercely independent republic of Lucca, and the Dukes of Este, or ubiquitous Visconti, it was known as Barga Fiorentina. This is still evident in its culture, language, art and architecture, and the proud Barghigiani continue to think of them as a cut above. Barga is nevertheless on the edge of the wilds of the Garfagnana, "land of wolves and outlaws" otherwise known for vast chestnut forests, wild boar, delicious pecorino cheeses and porcini mushrooms.
First constructed in 600, the cathedral of Saint Martin underwent various rebuilding over the centuries - up to obtaining some internal reconstruction elements in Gothic style - a very rare case for the region of Lucca.
The Carrara marble Italian Gothic pulpit is the work of Giovanni Pisano (c. 1250-1314), the son of Nicola Pisano. It took eight years (1302 to 1310) to complete from the time of commissioning. It is hard to believe but the pulpit was not in place for over three hundred years. It was installed in the right choir but damaged by a fire in 1595 and dismantled. Most of the fragments were gathered into a problematic reconstruction in 1926, while others are dispersed in museums around the world. Octagonal in shape, the shape was at least partly determined by the size of the building. There is a platform at the top of the stairs, which allowed for two additional reliefs. The pulpit has 9 historiated panels, 2 flat ones on the platform and 7 on the main body of the pulpit in a new convex shape. This convex shape gives a circular impression to the monument. In 1987 the whole square was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Adjoining the cathedral is the Piccolomini library, housing precious illuminated choir books and frescoes painted by the Umbrian Bernardino di Betto, called Pinturicchio, probably based on designs by Raphael. Located in the northern aisle is the Piccolomini Altar, which was started in 1481 by Andrea Bregno. Between 1501-1504 Michelangelo created the four lower statues, which depicted Saints Gregory, Paul, Peter and Pius.
The interior of the Duomo is faced with black and white marble and has a gilded ceiling and a frescoed dome. It was largely redecorated after a fire in 1595, which destroyed most of the medieval art works. Galileo is believed to have formulated his theory about the movement of a pendulum by watching the swinging of the incense lamp (not the present one) hanging from the ceiling of the nave. That lamp, smaller and simpler than the present one, it is now kept in the Camposanto, in the Aulla chapel. The Lizard 100 days before the high school graduation, students go and touch the two-tailed bronze lizard on the main door of the Cathedral. According to the tradition, this animal would be a sort of lucky charm for graduating students and it is so consumed that its head has completely become goldish, whereas the rest of the door is oxide-green. The legend tells that even the other little animals on the left side of the door would be luckycharms, such as the dog and the frog.
The Siena Cathedral Pulpit is one of the most outstanding artworks within this fabulous church. It was sculpted by Nicola Pisano and his assistants Arnolfo di Cambio, Lapo di Ricevuto, and Nicolas’ son Giovanni Pisano between the fall of 1265 and the fall of 1268. The pulpit has seven narrative panels and nine decorative columns carved from Carrara marble. It showcases Nicola Pisano’s skill in composing sculpture forms and his able integration of classical themes into Christian traditions. These hallmarks reveal both Nicola Pisano and the Siena pulpit as forerunners of the classical revival of the Italian Renaissance.

The inlaid marble mosaic floor is one of the most ornate of its kind in Italy, covering the whole floor of the cathedral. This undertaking went on from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries, and about forty artists made their contribution. The floor consists of 56 panels in different sizes.
