initiative based on practice proven to be
successful in equipping pupils, of all abilities,

4
What does this mean for our school?
  • By taking part in HLP, we aim
  • To develop and promote a whole school approach to
    the teaching of reading
  • To teach children the skills necessary to become
    independent readers with lifelong skills.
  • To promote pupils success through training in
self and peer assessment and in identifying their
    next steps in learning

5
Also to
  • To include all pupils whatever their ability
  • To encourage pupils to make and utilise the link
between reading, writing, talking and listening
  • To heighten motivation by providing an
    environment conducive to reading

6
How are we going to do this?
  • By using the methodologies and strategies of the
    Highland Literacy Project
  • COLLABORATIVE LEARNING
  • is the main technique used by HLP

7
What is Collaborative Learning?
  • Collaborative learning means
  • working together and sharing ideas for the good
    of each individual

  • valuing everyones opinion

    at home
  • you can only encourage them.
  • Set an good example
  • Share the enjoyment of reading with your child
  • Ensure that a variety of reading materials are
    available

16
Reading for Information
  • Teacher models the process initially using big
    books or shared texts
  • Independent trio work
  • Stages are time limited
  • It requires pupil to focus in on text with a
    purpose in mind
  • It requires good listening skills
  • It allows for sharing of prior knowledge
  • All children have a role to play so there is no
    opt out

  • Justifying answers

18
Now Its Your Turn!
  • The Fun Begins!

19
Read Together!
  • Open the door to reading with your child!
  • The shared experience of reading is one of the
most positive and enjoyable ways for children and
