2What is the Leadership Premester ?
- The Leadership Premester provides leadership
skills training to Guilford College students
serving in a leadership capacity in community
service programs
3Why a Leadership Premester ?
- Many of our students active in the community are
regularly called upon to serve in leadership
roles. - Leadership skills must be consciously taught and
practiced with ongoing opportunities for
reflection and feedback. - Good intentions are not enough. Students should
be trained and oriented to their sites
4Project Coordinator Timeline
- Project coordinators apply in spring for next
academic year. - Applicants are interviewed by Community Learning
staff and current project coordinators - New coordinators are chosen, attend an
orientation session and meet with outgoing
coordinators

about A.I.D.S. Organize campus events to
educate students about issues related to HIV and
A.I.D.S. Serve on the leadership team to locate
additional funds and to plan activities
throughout the year. African Services
CoalitionVolunteer with an African immigrant or
refugee at their home. Tutor the children, help
adults with their English proficiency through
general conversation, and assist adults with
basic socialization skills. Glenwood Library ESOL
with Latino AdultsWork with Latino adults to
increase their English proficiency, assist with
acclimation to the community and offer cultural
exchanges. . Montagnard Dega Association
Provide tutoring to Montagnard Dega children, who
are refuges from the highlands of Vietnam. Serve
as a mentor and plan field trips. Pathways
Tutoring Program Tutor children at Pathways, a
temporary housing shelter designated for
families. Serve as a mentor and plan other
activities for the children. Prison Literacy
Reading Discussion Group Lead a discussion
group and serve as a positive role model for
inmates at McCleanvilles Prison
(minimum-security facility). Project Community
This student-run community service office
organizes service-related events on and off
campus, helps students find volunteer
opportunities in the wider community, supports
other campus student organizations engaged in
service or issues of social change, and promotes
a campus-wide ethic of service. Member of the
Service Coordinating Council (SCC), which
dispenses Senate money for service and social
change projects. Project Home - Work closely
with the Greensboro Housing Coalition to address
problems of substandard housing in Greensboro by
bringing houses up to code by repairing,
painting, and getting rid of lead-based paints.
Work closely wit low-income residents and those
that have been unfairly discriminated against in
the housing market. Be an advocate for safe
housing through community research, readings,
panel discussions, and much more. Servant
CenterParticipate in evening activities and
conversation with men at the Servant Center, a
temporary shelter for homeless men with health
problems. Plan a variety of activities for the
men. YWCA Teen Families in Need Support young
mothers and their children by mentoring a teen
mom, or providing childcare for infants and
toddlers.

Teen Families in Need. Coordinators work with
the Volunteer Training Coordinator to develop and
provide training for volunteers at their
particular site in addition to developing
opportunities open to the entire campus to
consider important community issues. Internship
credit is available. Specific Responsibilities 1.
Attend the Leadership Pre-mester August 11th
14, 2004. (Project Coordinators will receive a
250 stipend) Assist with one of three Avanti
service projects Homelessness, HOME,
Multi-cultural Greensboro or assist with
preparations for the Volunteer Fair/Retreat in
Project Community which will serve as a
leadership practicum. 2. Recruit volunteers for
your program by attending the Volunteer Fair
(9/1), and training of volunteers at the
Volunteer Retreat (9/4). Develop other
recruiting methods as appropriate for each
respective project. 3. Plan and provide site
specific training for volunteers that will help
them develop skills needed to perform as a
competent volunteer as well as to understand the
cultural and political history of the people
being served. Provide ongoing support and
opportunities for reflection to ensure a positive
experience and optimal learning for
volunteers. 4. Work with the Volunteer Training
Coordinator and other Project Coordinators to
develop a coordinated training plan to address
common needs and issues across programs. Sponsor
programs and forums that will encourage a
campus-wide ethic of service and address
important community issues. 5. Attend a weekly
meeting with the Volunteer Training Coordinator
and other Project Coordinators to ensure smooth
running of the programs. 6. Serve as liaison
between Guilford College students, staff, and
community agencies and programs involved with the
project you coordinate. 7. Turn in timesheets of
volunteer hours (individual and for your team of
volunteers) and a written reflection each
month. Specific Skills and Qualifications
Commitment to volunteer service as an important
component of a liberal arts education.
Experience as a committed volunteer in the wider
community. Willingness to consider charity and
justice issues related to community service
learn about issues of race and power and to
encourage volunteers engagement in understanding
how these issues impact our community engage in
a planning process to set personal development
goals and develop a portfolio. Individual must
be responsible and willing to make a one-year
commitment.
