  strikes, or work stoppages to achieve their goals
• The strikes in the late 1800s started peacefully,
  but eventually turned violent (riots)
• The owners often called on govt troops to put
  down the strikes

• By 1900, things begin to change in America and
  for the next 20 years, we enter the Progressive
  Era
• Americans began to react to the working
  conditions by working for change

  achieving change instead of strikes
• They used the govt heavily, and Presidents Teddy
  Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson started programs to
  help them
