Title: Call It Courage

1
Call It Courage
By Armstrong Sperry
Powerpoint by Alina
2
The Main Character
The main character in the story is Mafatu. When
Mafatu was at the age of three, he and his mother
were caught in a storm called a hurricane. His
mother had died because she was saving her
beloved child. She had time to save Mafatu
because once they got onto shore, right before
her terrible death came, she cracked a coconut
open and fed Mafatu the milk inside. Because of
that Mafatu is afraid of the sea.
3
Uri the dog
  • Uri is Mafatus dog that follows him everywhere
he goes. Uri is a yellow, skinny dog that gets
attacked by the great mao tiger-shark. He is a
    lazy dog.

4
Tavana Nui
  • Tavana Nui is Mafatus father. He is the head
chief and when he dies, Mafatu will be the head
chief because he is the son of a father that is a
head chief. At the beginning of the story, Tavana
Nui is ashamed of of his son because he is afraid
of the sea but at the end, Mafatu did all of
those courageous things that make Tavana Nui be
    proud of Mafatu.

5
Kivi
  • Kivi is also one of Mafatus friends. Kivi is a
bird that is called an albatross. Albatrosses are
really big birds who are about exactly like
seagulls but bigger. Albatrosses are sea birds
that fly around the sea with their families
whether they have one or not.

6
Settings
There are four settings in the story, The first
setting is Hikueru which is a very low island
that Mafatu lives on. The second setting is the
dangerous,wave-splashing sea! Where Mafatu sails
our on to find another islandto prove his
courage to everyone else. The third setting is
the high island that Mafatu finds on his journey
to prove his courage. The last setting in the
story is the Smoking Island. The smoking island
is where the eaters-of-men(cannibals) live until
the come to the high island to chase Mafatu. Once
they catch him they will eat him and his soul
with give the eaters-of-men more power. It is best
for Mafatu to just drown in the sea than give the
eaters-of-men more power to live.
7
Problems
  • The first problem in the story is that Mafatu is
afraid of the sea. He wouldnt even go out
fishing with the other kids that live in Hikueru.
Because Mafatu is afraid of the sea, everyone
calls him a coward. Only Viri stands up for him.
He said that he makes good spears.
  • 2. The second problem in the story is when
Mafatu gets ready to leave the high island, he
hears strange drumming somewhere on the island
which told him that the eaters-of-man had come.
Mafatu tries to swim away on his hand-made canoe
until he sees the eaters-of-men were right on his
tail! Closer, closer they get until Mafatu could
see their black skins shining in the suns glare.

Solutions
  • Mafatu then sails out to the sea to find another
island so he could prove his courage. On the
island that Mafatu finds, he kills a wild boar,
he saves his dog, Uri from being eaten by the
mao (the big tiger-shark) and builds a fine
canoe. All of those things tell you that Mafatu
    is courageous after all.
  • When Mafatu gets chased by the eaters-of-men, he
almost gets caught but soon, the wind blows a bit
harder so Mafatu could get away. Its a good
thing that Mafatu could get away because if he
got caught the cannibals would bring him back to
    the island and eat him.

9
The Summary
  • When Mafatu was a little boy, he almost drowned
in the sea. From that day forward, he was
terrified of the sea. Now everyone calls him a
coward because he wouldnt go out fishing with
them. So Mafatu sails out to find another island
with only his dog, Uri by his side and just a
miniature canoe to prove his courage.

This book will be good for..
  • I would recommend this book to everyone who likes
to read descriptive writing and wants to get an
example of it. This book is full of descriptive
writing and in some sentences you might not
understand the writing because its a bit too
descriptive. Call It Courage is the most
descriptive book that I have ever read.

11
Acrostic Poem
  • Courage is what it took to kill a wild boar.
  • Over the dangerous waves Mafatu went.
  • Uri is Mafatus skinny, yellow dog.
  • Roughly he was chased by the hungry cannibals.
  • An albatross is what Kivi is.
  • Going away to another island.
  • Everyone calls Mafatu a coward.

12
Sharks
  • Sharks are dangerous, sea creatures with
humongous teeth, that are used to tear through
their preys flesh, then gulp it down. Mafatu
kills the great tiger-shark in the story to save
his dog, Uri from being killed.

13
Best Part In Story
  • I thought my favorite part in the story is when
Mafatu gets chased by the cannibals. That was my
favorite part because it was really exciting on
the part where the author described how close the
cannibals were. Soon the black canoes were so
close that the boy could see the shine of dark
bodies, the glint of teeth, and flash of
    ornament.

14
Worst part in the story
  • I thought that the worst part in the story was
that Mafatu didnt have any friends and everyone
called him a coward because that is actually
really mean to say mean things behind the
    persons back.

15
A Different Ending
  • This is what I would do to change the ending of
the story. Once the cannibals start chasing
Mafatu, they dont quit on trying to catch him,
they take another way to Hikueru. When they get
there, they kill all of the people who lived
there and carry them back to the Smoking Island.
They desert Hikueru so when Mafatu gets there,
there will be nothing but water and sand
    everywhere.

16
Conclusion
  • That is the end of my power point about Call It
Courage. I gave you all of the information that I
could about the book and I hope you will read it
someday. When you do you, you will think the same
as what I think about the book which is that the
book is really awesome, descriptive and exciting.
