Intro

• This story is about a small boy, who when he was
  little almost drowned at sea. And since that
  happened he has been horrified of the sea, Which
  is not good for a boy who lives on a small
  island. Worse now are the boys who live with with
  him, because theyre always making fun of him.
  And Mafatu knows that he needs to fight his worst
  nightmare The sea. He leaves the island with
  his dog Uri only for company, to try and prove
  his courage or to die trying.

Mafatu

• Mafatu is a very lonely boy. He has no people
  for friends just two animals, Uri and Kivi
  because hes afraid of the sea. Luckily for him
  he is very good at making things so he helps the
  tribe by making nets and fishing spears. But the
  other boys think thats women's work. Everyone
  thought that he isnt going to be a good leader.
  Because he is afraid of the sea and wont be able
  to go sailing with his tribe and wont be able to
  lead them into war. Mafatu feels very sad for
  his mom because she died to save him, from the
  hurricane. I think thats why Mafatu is so
  lonely.

Uri

• Uri is Mafatus best friend. Uri is always
  accompanying Mafatu and trying to be brave for
  him, Since Mafatu was not brave for himself. He
  is a very skinny and small dog.

Kivi

• Kivi is an albatross. He is one of Mafatus only
  friends. Kivi guides Mafatu to the High island
  where the cannibals live. And when Mafatu is
  sailing away he guides him back to hikueru.

Kana

• Kana is one of the boys in the tribe . He is one
  of the only ones who tries to give Mafatu a
  chance, because all of the other boys are busy
  making fun of Mafatu. But when Kana thinks
  Mafatu is not around he calls him a coward.

Tavana Nui

• Tavana Nui is Mafatus father. He is the leader
  of the tribe that lives on Hikueru. He doesnt
  think that Mafatu is cut out to be the leader of
  the tribe when he dies, because Mafatu is afraid
  of the ocean.

Mafatus Mom

• She isnt in the book very much, just at the
  beginning because she dies. Mafatus mom dies in
  a hurricane on the ocean with Mafatu but Mafatu
  still lives.

Tiger Shark

• The tiger shark is very ferocious. Mafatu tries
  to kill the tiger shark because it keeps on
  stealing all the fish in Mafatus fish trap.

Wild Boar

• The wild boar is a small but aggressive little
  creature. It surprises Mafatu twice when he is
  scavenging through the grass. Mafatu gets mad
  and then kills him.

Cannibals

• The cannibals are vicious people. They like to
  eat human flesh. Cannibals also eat everything
  that normal people do its just that they like do
  eat humans because they want to absorb their
  soul.

Moana

• Moana is the sea god. He tries to kill Mafatu
  while Mafatus in the ocean. When Mafatu was
  little his mom was taken from him by Moana and
  now he tried to get Mafatu to.Moana is just a
  native believe. Moana can control the waves.

Hikueru

• Hikueru is the place where everyone lives.
  Mafatu feels lonely so he leaves the island to
  prove his courage. Just before you leave Hikueru
  you have to go past the coral reef which is very
  deadly to most people.

Ocean

• The ocean surrounds all the islands. Sharks live
  in the middle of the ocean. The ocean is
  controlled by Moana the sea god. The ocean can
  create huge waves which can throw you off your
  boat and destroy it.

High island

• The High island is where the cannibals live but
  they dont come until the end of the book. This
  is the island that Mafatu sails to when he gets
  ship wrecked. The island has a volcano and a
  good lookout plateau which Mafatu finds and uses.
  A lot of trees grow on this island likes
  coconuts, bananas, and breadfruit.

Lagoon

• The lagoon is located at the high island, that is
  where Mafatu killed the tiger shark. You have to
  cross the coral reef to make it to the ocean.
  This lagoon is very beautiful and is as very nice
  place to sail.

Problems and Solutions

• Mafatu is afraid of ocean.
• Cannibals live on high island.
• Tiger shark keeps stealing food

• Mafatu leaves island to prove his courage.
• Mafatu tries to leave island before they get
  there.
• Mafatu kills tiger shark.

Rating

• This book is a very good book. I recommend it
  for kids over the age of ten because it has a lot
  of hard words that some people might not know. I
  dont think that there are many parts that I
  didnt like in this book. I havent told you the
  ending so youll have to read this book to find
  out.
