Hold Onto Your Hats! -
  • The next word we talked about in class is the
one that truly drives this artifact APOCALYPSE,
a great ending or beginning. Either way works in
this scene, because it is left to the viewer.
The reason that this scene works so well, is that
it leaves the idea of what exactly Vladimir and
Estragons great END/BEGINNING really is. I
believe that they are waiting for the Apocalypse
of their world. Godot, is God in this scene, and
the uncertainty that Vladimir and Estragon have
of meeting the end of their demise (or the end of
everything as we know it) drives them to keep
waiting waiting for Godot to show up. But what
this scene really says to me is that by waiting
everyday for Godot, Vladimir and Estragon forget
how to live. They do the same thing day in and
day out, waiting for someone (or something) that
they arent even sure exists. Alive on the
    outsidedead inside.
  • They themselves become apocalyptic.
  • We began this semesters class with one
wordCONTEXT. In using this word to its utmost
ability, I decided to give the context of my
artifact LIFE. In the Irish play by Samuel
Beckett, WAITING FOR GODOT, one word always
seemed to be screaming out at meLife.
Ironically, in order to achieve the context of
life, I decided to put a scene from the play on
DVD (and in doing so, took away life), creating a
virtual world in which I (Darren Brett) became
all three characters in the scene. I was able to
give all three of these characters life by
changing their environment to a limbo
virtuality if you will. I would not have been
able to achieve this context without using the
    context of virtuality.

Shhh Did You Hear That?
  • The underscore of music, it turns out, became a
very important piece of the puzzle. If you
listen closely, youll recognize that the score
is looped over and over again to where you
realize there is NO beginning and NO end to the
piece. I wanted to choose something that was fun
to listen to, but in using a fugue I was also
able to accomplish a sense of sadness as well.
The fugue by Bach was a great mood-setter, a
    great deadener as well.

God Bless America
  • When I think of the word AMERICA, there are
many other words and images that come to mind.
But one stands out above all else, God. Whether
the western side of the world likes to admit it
or not, there is one thing that keeps America
separate from the East God. Just look at the
United States money, its churches, its fight
songs, and battle cries. God, whether we choose
to believe or not, is everywhere we look. In
Central and South America, you will find that
most believe in Christianity above all else. I
believe that Vladimir and Estragon are part of
that America. The part where they believe God is
going to come and fix all their problems, God is
the answer, God is everything and nothing, God
controls the Apocalypse of the world, their fate.

Easy Way Out?
  • I know its going to sound like Im full of
shit, but the truth is that I really dont know
much about my artifact, other than it controlled
me more than I controlled it. Two words drove me
to this thing, and those were APOCALYPSE and
VIRTUALITY. I believe I achieved an explanation
through art in answering both of these
definitions. Where it goes from here is
uncertain, but I cant wait to find out! Because
I dont know about you, but I like not knowing if
Godot is going to show up! What fun would that
    be?
