BACKGROUND
  • (1862-1935) was an American Evangelist, born in
    Iowa.
  • A professional baseball player in the National
    League for Chicago White Sox and preacher.
  • In 1888, he traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
  • In 1889, his daughter Helen Sunday was born
  • Sets a record of 90 bases stolen in 116 games in
    1891.

BACKGROUND/EARLY LIFE
  • In 1891, he left baseball to enter full-time
    Christian work. He takes a secretary religious
    department job at YMCA.
  • He became a preacher in 1896. Preached to
    millions and led three hundred thousand men and
    women to faith in Christ.
  • In 1897, he hold his first revival meeting and
    nearly 100 people accept Christ during the week
    of meetings.

BELIEFS
  • That liquors influence is degrading on the
    individual, family, politics and business.
  • He believed that it was best to simplify
    traditional Christian teachings in an effort to
    appeal to the less educated.
  • He believed that being a Christian meant someone
    coming to god as a lost sinner, accepted Jesus
    and their personal savior, surrenders to him and
    confesses to him while pleasing him everyday.

  • He also believed that there were 7 things in
    making a success of the Christian Life.

  • 3. Win someone for Christ
  • 4. Shun evil companions.
  • 5. Join Some Church
  • 6. Give to the support of the Lords Work
  • 7. Do not become discouraged

BELIEFS
  • He believed that his teachings should be on what
    was of great concern to the world today and the
    ways that people are sinning against God.
  • His teachings were heavily based on the moral
    evils of the day alcohol, gambling, socialism,
    political corruption, etc.

  • Sunday and wife Helen leaving New York where the
    evangelist preached a sermon to select four
    hundred.
  • He wants to do away with liquor. He is against
    sin and fought for what he believed in. He
    traveled from town to town, holding meetings in
    wooden tabernacles condemning liquor, birth
    control and other sins.

IMPACT ON HISTORY
  • He was recognized for his determined contribution
    to passing the Prohibition Amendment and
    promoting the sale of war bonds during World War
    I.

CONCLUSION
  • He feels that the Gospel is open to all, even the
    worst sinner has the right.
  • He fought a good fight and finished his course.
    He kept his faith in God and will be saved. He
    did what he was commissioned to do and died a
    respectable man.
