1
Nursing Hot TopicsCourse 120
  • Cathy Rick, RN, CNAA, FACHE
  • Oyweda Moorer, RN, MSN, CNA
  • Office of Nursing Services

2
Purpose Statement and Objectives
  • To have a dialogue with nursing staff about
nursing strategic planning with respect to IT
initiatives, including the benefits of such
programs on the delivery of care.
  • Objectives
  • Provide overview of Nursing IT goals and
    initiatives
  • Increase knowledge of interrelatedness between
    NNEC goals
  • Obtain suggestions for future initiatives and
improving the system from Nursing staff,
    Automated Data Processing Applications
    Coordinators (ADPAC), and Clinical Application
    Coordinators (CACs)

3
Food for Thought
  • Questions to keep in mind
  • 1. Do you think the strategic plan supports the
work of nursing in the field?
  • 2. What do you think about the new functions and
structure of the NNEC Technology group?
  • 3. Describe an Informatics innovation or Systems
Design innovation that you would like the
National Nurse Executive Council to consider.

4
ONS Vision
  • Future IT Technology will
  • Be accessible, effective, user friendly
  • Be available at the point of care
  • Facilitate seamless processes
  • Support improving patient outcomes
  • Serve all levels of nursing
  • Facilitate decision support

5
Value Statement
  • Nursing should benefit from technology that
    supports improving patient outcomes
  • Technology needs to serve all levels of nursing,
    creating seamless processes that support
    proactive practice in clinical, administrative,
    research, and education areas
  • New technology should have utility as well as
    efficiency
  • Nursing should provide input in every phase of
    technology design, implementation, and procurement

6
ONS Current Strategic Plan
National Nursing Strategic Plan
7
ONS Future Strategic Plan
  • Planning Process The planning group was tasked
with developing a list of wildly important goals
for the future of Nursing. This list was then
subject to an affinity diagram process, where
like items were assembled into the following goal
    categories

8
Technology Consultative Group
  • Formerly Technology Goal Group 2
  • New structure
  • New strategy

9
Current ONS IT Projects
  • Project Teams
  • VANOD
  • Bar Code Expansion
  • ICU Flow Sheet
  • VA/DoD Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and
Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) Patient Hand Offs
  • VHA/DoD Patient Acuity/Schedules Pilot
  • MRSA Virtual Simulation Training
  • VA Quality Enhancement Research Initiative, HANDS
    Pilot Project
  • IT Annual Assessment
  • Admissions Assessment
  • E-Proficiency
  • Staffing Methodology
  • Pharmacy Re-engineering
  • Hands-on Automated Nursing Data System Project
    Pilot
  • Funded through the Quality Enhancement Research
    Initiative

10
Current ONS IT Projects (contd)
  • Committees National Nurse Executive Council
    (NNEC)
  • Bar Code Oversight Board
  • CPRS Change Control Board
  • Repository Oversight Board
  • VHA Data Consortium
  • IDMC
  • MHV/CAB
  • HISEB

11
Bar Code Expansion (BCE) Project
  • wCareMed Utilizes barcode scanning technology
    to support medication administration
  • wCareMed Goes beyond checking the five
rights features allergy warnings, entry of pain
    scale information and PRN effectiveness
  • wCareView Designed to provide the functional
components of a patients paper chart, while
offering the flexibility of wireless mobility
  • wCareCollect Improves the specimen collection
    process
  • wBloodCare Provides functionality at the
bedside to ensure that the correct patient
    receives the correct blood product
  • wCareAssist Provides care management tools that
    support the nursing process

12
ICU Flow Sheet
  • E-document on patient record in ICU
  • Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) Products
  • Interface w/CPRS

13
VA/DoD OEF/OIF Patient Hand Offs
  • Effort to standardize electronic polytrauma
patient hand off between the DoD and VA
  • Communication across episodes of care and sites
    of care
  • Electronic Patient Hand-off uses SBAR
    Communication Framework
  • Situation
  • Background
  • Assessment
  • Recommendation

14
VHA/DoD Patient Acuity/Scheduler System Pilot
  • Optimum nurse staffing based on varying levels of
    patient acuity and other variables
  • Joint interoperability funding (JIF)
  • This pilot will test the effectiveness of this
    approach

15
HANDS Project Pilot
  • Collaborative effort between University of
Illinois School of Nursing and Office of Nursing
    Services
  • Miami VA Nursing Service
  • An electronic short/story/synopsis of a
    patients care
  • Tracks patient outcomes
  • Utilizes nursing taxonomies
  • North American Nursing Diagnostic Association
    (NANDA)
  • Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC)
  • Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC)

16
MRSA Virtual Simulation Training
  • VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS)
  • Role models behavior
  • Widespread dissemination among VA facilities

17
HOANA Patient Warning Systems
  • Tracks changes in patients status
  • Device alerts medical staff of any sudden drops
    in HR or RR
  • Alerts nursing staff if patient gets out of bed,
and prompts an audio command to the patient to
    return to bed

18
Technology Questions Added to Practice
Environment Scale
  • Access to computerized patient care information
    at the point of care
  • IT systems that are up-and-running when I need
    them
  • A computerized healthcare record system supports
    nursing practice
  • Effective training on new technology
  • I am able to provide better care to my patients
because of the information systems available to me

19
IT Annual Assessment
  • Purpose
  • Evaluation of the effectiveness and availability
of technology resources in VHA healthcare
delivery settings that support nursing practice
  • Origination
  • Recommendation of the National Commission on VA
    Nursing
  • Activity
  • Each facility submits technology and software
