Title: Outdoor Education
1Outdoor Education
- Blackhawk School District
2Come on a tour
- It is tradition for our fifth grade students to
have the unforgettable experience of spending a
few days at the YMCA Camp Kon-O-Kwee in Fombell.
3Welcome to the camp
- Camp Kon-O-Kwee is 500 acres of fields and
woodlands located along the Connoquenessing
Creek. It offers a wide variety of outdoor
education activities.
4Getting Settled
- As the children arrive at the camp, laden with
sleeping bags and totes, they are checked into
their cabins and introduced to the high school
students who will be their counselors.
5Outdoor Survival
- During Outdoor Survival, students learn the
importance of having heat, water, food, and
shelter during an exploring expedition.
6- They discover ways to take care of themselves in
the wilderness by learning some of the basic
skills involved in outdoor survival.
7The Wall
- Participants don helmet and harness to find
adventure and discover courage and personal
resources they never knew they had as they climb
this man-made mountain.
8Water Ecology
- During water ecology, students sift screens along
the edges of the pond to observe a variety of
water creatures.
9- This allows them to explore, collect, and
identify aquatic plants and animals in the pond
community.
10Archery
- With emphasis on safety, students learn the
fundamental skills of archery. They experience a
feeling of accomplishment while learning a new
skill.
11Boating
- Students develop a sense of confidence and
respect for water safety through discussion and
actual boating experience.
12- They learn that operating a paddleboat takes
coordination and teamwork.
13Nature Walk
- Flora and fauna are identified during the 1½ mile
botanical/ geological walk.
14- In the woods, the fifth graders study the complex
interactions of the ecosystem.
15Meal Time
- Ask any of the campers about the food served in
the new dining hall and they will all say
DELICIOUS!
16- While they are eating pancakes, tacos, and sloppy
joes, the children also learn responsibility as
they help serve and clean up the dishes.
17Goodbye...
- For all the students involved, from the young 5th
grade campers to the senior counselors completing
their final year at Blackhawk, Camp Kon-O-Kwee
provides them with educational adventures that
will long be remembered.
