History
  • In 1776 Mission San Juan Capistrano began to be
    built.
  • It took 9 years to be built fully.
  • In 1812 an earthquake destroyed the Great Stone
    Church.
  • The Great Stone Church would not be rebuilt.
  • San Juan Capistranos property was sold for 710
    in 1845.

Indians of the Mission
  • Men were hunters and fishermen. They made their
own tools and bows and arrows.
  • Women made beautiful baskets. The baskets were
used for food, water, to cook in, and to carry
    babies.
  • Children spent their days helping
  • their parents or playing.

4
The Swallows of Capistrano
  • Each year San Juan Capistrano celebrates the
    Swallows Festival.
  • The Swallows begin to return on March 19.
  • It is a two month long celebration which includes
the Presidents Ball, The Hairiest Man contest,
Pets on Parade, Hat Contest, Pancake Breakfast,
Rodeo, and the annual Swallow Day Parade.

Mission San Juan Capistrano Today
  • San Juan Capistrano is the only building still
standing in California which Father Serra is
    known to have actually officiated.
  • Only a few walls and a single dome of The Great
    Stone Church still stand.
  • The bell wall, which was built the year after the
    earthquake is still in use.
