Introduction to the California Missions
  • The missions were founded by the Spanish.
  • The purpose of the missions were to civilize and
    Christianize the Native Americans.
  • In 1833 the missions were secularized and mission
    lands went to the rancheros.
  • 1848 marked the end of the mission era.

Father Junipero Serra (1713-1789)
  • Father Serra was born in Mallorca, Spain on
    November 24, 1713.
  • As an adult he was 5 feet 2 inches tall.
  • He received a doctorate of philosophy from
    University of Luliana.
  • He took his religious vows in 1730.
  • He spent 17 years in missionary work.
  • Founded nine missions.
  • He was the Presidente of the chain of missions.
  • Father Serra had asthma and a chronic sore on his
    leg.
  • He died at age 70 on August 28, 1784.
  • He was buried in San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo.

First Mission
  • The first mission is San Diego de Alcala. It was
    founded on July 16, 1769 by Father Junipero Serra.

  • The second mission was San Carlos Borromeo de
    Carmelo. It was founded on June 3, 1770 by
    Father Junipero Serra.

  • Its name is San Antonio de Padua, and it was
    founded on July 14th, 1771 by Father Junipero
    Serra.

  • San Gabriel Arcangel
  • September 8, 1771
  • Founded by Father Pedro Cambon and Angel Somera.
  • This mission, although one of the most
    prosperous, was also one of the most difficult
    missions for the padres assigned there.

The Missions Today
  • Most missions are still used today as Catholic
    churches.
  • Few original mission buildings are intact today.
  • Seven missions are national historic landmarks.
  • Two are run by the state of California.
  • Mission architecture is popular today.
  • Because most missions are governed by the
    Catholic churches, State money cant be used to
    restore them.
  • The missions continue to be popular tourist
    places, especially for fourth grade classes.
