Phillis Wheatleys Childhood

• Fatou was born in Senegal in the year of 1753
• At the age of 8 she was kidnapped and taken to a
  slave ship
• Later Fatou was sold and to a man John Wheatley
  for his wife Susannah
• Later her name was changed to Phillis

Phillis Childhood Continued

• Later, Fatou learned how read and write in the
  English Language.
• The Wheatleys two twin children, Mary and
  Nathaniel helped Phillis get her education
• At the age of 12 Phillis was reading the Greek
  and Latin Classics

Phillis Poems

• She wrote her first poem at the age of thirteen
• Phillis first poem was published on December 21,
  1767
• Her first book was called Poems on Various
  Subjects and Religious and Moral

Comparing Phillis to other Poets

• Phillis poems are more complex
• Kids of younger age wouldnt understand her poems

• Robert Burns is a Scottish poet.
• They have poetry in common but, that is about it
• Their lives are totally different.

Phillis Adulthood

• Phillis was released by Mrs. Wheatley
• Then she married a free black man John Peters
• Later, John Peters abandoned Phillis.
• Then Phillis died of poverty in 1784
