• Phillis was born in Gambia, Africa.
• People think Phillis was born somewhere between
  1753-1755.
• Phillis was sold to John and Susanna Wheatley
  when she was a child. She was a slave for them.
• HER FAMILY THAT SHE WAS WITH TAUGHT HER HOW TO
  READ AND WRITE, SO SHE STARTED WRITING POEMS
  ABOUT HER LIFE AND HOW IT WAS. SHE SOLD AT LEAST
  1 OF HER POEMS.

Early Life

• When Phillis was 7 years old, some white men
  forced her into a ship to go to America.
• The white men sailed all the way to Africa just
  to buy slaves.
• She was one of them.
• Phillis started reading poems just to remember
  what it was like to be free.

• Phillis Wheatly wrote poems about how slavery
  was.
• Writing poems was important because of religion
  and what they did and how they did it.
• Phillis poems helped slaves by telling them it
