What rights are being broken
  • Article 1.
  • All human beings are born free and equal in
    dignity and rights.They are endowed with reason
    and conscience and should act towards one another
    in a spirit of brotherhood.
  • Everyone is entitled to all the rights and
    freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without
    distinction of any kind, such as race, colour,
    sex, language, religion, political or other
    opinion, national or social origin, property,
    birth or other status. Furthermore, no
    distinction shall be made on the basis of the
    political, jurisdictional or international status
    of the country or territory to which a person
    belongs, whether it be independent, trust,
    non-self-governing or under any other limitation
    of sovereignty.
  • Article 5.
  • No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel,
    inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

What the issue is
  • Prisoners in Guantanamo bay are being tortured by
    U.S. soldiers.
  • Human rights are being broken because of this.
  • U.S. President does not believe he is bound by
    the McCain Amendment (The ban on cruel, inhuman,
    and degrading treatment as well as torture).

Torture methods used by the U.S.
GENEVA CONVENTION One of a series of agreements
first formulated at an international convention
held in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1864,
establishing rules for the treatment of prisoners
of war, the sick, and the wounded. To this end
the following acts are and shall remain
prohibited at any time and in any place
whatsoever with respect to the above-mentioned
persons (a) Violence to life and person, in
particular murder of all kinds, mutilation, cruel
treatment and torture

Where there is a problem
  • Torturing is against the law of human rights.
  • Torturing is inhumane, and does not reflect the
    values of U.S.
  • U.S. are allowing torture, stating that it is
    considered as interrogation.

What the UN has done about it and what it plans
to do
  • They are in the process of creating a treaty that
    would monitor the places of detention.
  • U.N. human rights investigators called Guantanamo
    Bay to be immediately closed
  • A U.N. report says that U.S. should give all
    inmates a trial or else free them immediately.

  • The aim is to prevent torture
  • Try to improve the detention facilities

    aware of this problem
  • Demonstrate/Protest against it
  • Promote human rights within your own country
