Background
  • ORIs focuses on military bearing and personal
    appearance
  • It is imperative that cadets look their best

Open Ranks Inspection
  • Entire flight participates
  • Flight Commander (Flt/CC) and Deputy Flight
    Commander (Flt/CD) follow inspector
  • Performed at least once a week
  • Any member of FT staff may be the inspector

ORI Positioning/Verbiage
  • Inspector enters area and Flt/CC calls the flight
    to attention and greets inspector with a salute
    and proper greeting
  • The inspector tells the Flt/CC to prepare the
    flight and another salute is exchanged
  • Flt/CC prepares the flight by putting them in
    open ranks and aligning the elements

  • Reporting In Inspector stands approx. four paces
    in front of the guidon bearer
  • Flt/CC should be three paces in front of the
    guidon bearers right side, facing down the line.
    Then takes one step forward, conducts a right
    face, and salutes the inspector to report in.
  • Reports in Sir (Ma'am), ___ Flight is prepared
    for inspection.

  • Inspector then inspects the Flt/CC while Flt/CD
    approaches to take the clipboard to record
    discrepancies
  • The inspector will then move to inspect the
    guidon bearer and down the first element
  • The Flt/CC will precede the inspector, one pace
    to the right and one pace back, and the Flt/CD
    will follow the inspector.
  • Inspector and Flt/CC will perform duck walk.

  • When finished with element the Flt/CC hesitates,
    allowing inspector and Flt/CD to pass in front
    and inspect the rear of the first element
  • After inspecting the rear of each element, the
    inspector halts and turns in front of the element
    leader of the next rank. The Flt/CD and Flt/CC
    will resume their previous positions.

  • After the last element has been inspected from
    the rear the inspector will halt and execute an
    about face
  • The inspector inspects the Flt/CD and then
    commands POST

  • The inspector marches to the right of the element
    leaders
  • Flt/CC should be three paces in front of the
    guidon bearers right side, facing down the line.
    Flt/CC calls the flight to attention.
  • Flt/cc takes one step forward, conducts a right
    face and receives comments from the inspector
  • The Flt/CC will then salute and greet the
    departing official appropriately, Good morning
    (afternoon or evening), Sir (Ma'am).

ORI Evaluation/Grading
  • Anything wrong with the uniform during an ORI is
    a discrepancy
  • Any cadet who receives a total of four or more
    discrepancies during a single open ranks
    inspection will be counseled via IMT 17
