TWO TYPES OF IMMUNITY

• INBORN
• Natural Active
• You are already born immune to certain things.
• Established by genetics
• Duration entire life

• ACQUIRED
• Immunity developed later in life
• Four different types of acquired immunity active
  natural,
• active artificial,
• passive natural,
• passive artificial.

TYPES OF ACQUIRED IMMUNITY

• ACTIVE
• Immunity results from the production of
  antibodies in your own body

• PASSIVE
• Antibodies are not made in your own body
• Made somewhere else and put into a person

ACQUIRED ACTIVE IMMUNITY

• NATURAL
• Established by being naturally exposed to a
  pathogen and having WBCs create antibodies to
  kill the pathogen
• Duration once infected, immunity lasts a lifetime

• ARTIFICIAL
• Vaccination a solution of weakened or killed
  pathogens that stimulate antibody production
• (examples measles, mumps, polio)
• Duration usually lasts a lifetime (except
  tetanus booster shots)

ACQUIRED PASSIVE IMMUNITY

• NATURAL
• Babies receive antibodies from moms blood during
  pregnancy
• Breast-feeding baby receives antibodies from
  milk
• Duration 3-6 months

• ARTIFICIAL
• Sick person gets an injection of antibodies from
  someone else
• Duration 1-2 weeks
