1
How to Deal with Gossip
2
Introduction
  • Most of us have been the subject of gossip at
some point in our lives, and we've all felt the
sting of humiliation that goes along with it.
  • On the other hand, we've all done some gossiping
of our own, and we may have hurt someone else's
    feelings as a result.

3
Introduction
  • They're finding that, contrary to popular
    opinion, gossip isn't always bad.
  • Although it can be used to harm others, gossip is
also the glue that binds social groups together
and a valuable tool that helps people learn the
    rules of their social worlds.

4
Gossip - Definition
  • Rumor or talk of a personal, sensational, or
    intimate nature.
  • A person who habitually spreads intimate or
    private rumors or facts.
  • Trivial, chatty talk or writing.
  • A person who habitually reveals personal or
    sensational facts about others

5
Gossip - Main Outcomes
  • There are many outcomes, such as
  • Depression,
  • Bad working environment,
  • Waste of time,
  • Feeling of solitude and
  • the destruction of a reputation.

6
Strategies to Avoid Gossip
  • There are many situations in our workplace that
    lead us to some gossip.
  • It is important to highlight that most of its
outcomes are not constructive and will not help
    anyone at all.
  • Based on such approach it is important to know
some strategies to better deal with this
    inconvenient subject.

7
Strategy 1
  • Be direct with people who are gossiping about you
or others. Tell them that what they're doing is
hurtful and that you refuse to participate in
    such discussions.

8
Strategy 2
  • Change the subject.
  • If your boss, a coworker or a close friend is
gossiping and you feel uncomfortable asking them
to stop, change the subject so that you don't
have to participate in gossip that may end up
    hurting someone else's feelings.

9
Strategy 3
  • Prevent gossip by paying attention to what you do
and say around others, especially around those
who tend to gossip. While it may not be fun to
censor yourself, at least you won't be providing
any new material for people to spread rumors
    about.

10
Strategy 4
  • Tell your secrets only to trusted friends to be
sure that no one is spreading your business
    around town.

11
Tips and Warnings
  • If someone is gossiping about you at work, handle
the situation yourself before reporting that
    person to your boss.
  • Ask the gossiper to stop talking about you behind
your back. If your coworker continues to blab
after you've asked her to stop, then talk with
your supervisor to remedy the situation.

12
Tips and Warnings
  • Don't spread gossip about others. You don't want
people spreading gossip about you, so don't
gossip about others. Participating in gossip,
however fun it may seem in the moment, will only
hurt someone's feelings in the end.

13
Conclusion
  • When people gossip its because they cant deal
with negative issues in their own lives, and its
easier for them to criticize others than to face
    their own situation.
  • And finally it gives people a feeling of power.
