What is Outcomes Based Education
  • The Years 1-10 Key Learning Area Syllabuses are
    examples of a recent trend across all Australian
    education systems to outcomes based education.
  • In the past most curriculum documents have
    concentrated on the inputs to education the
    subject matter and teaching methods. The
    knowledge, skills and processes we wanted
    students to gain was usually given in broad aims
    and objectives.
  • Outcomes based education is about- making
    explicit what students should know and be able to
    do (the outcomes of their learning)- providing
    a clear statement of the knowledge and skills
    that teachers and curriculum developers consider
    essential to a Key Learning Area- the
    culminating demonstration of learning
    (Spady,1993). The benchmarks against which
    performance is assessed, must be observable in
    the learning environment.

Principles of Outcomes Based Education
  • 1. Clear Goals
  • Why am I doing this?
  • Is this worth doing?
  • Is this the most appropriate learning activity?
  • 3. Learning for All
  • All students can make progress in their learning,
    given the right circumstances.

2. Standards - referenced A variety and continuum
of learning achievements will constitute progress
from one outcome to the next.
