Whats a Noun?
  • A noun is a
  • Person Mrs. Militello, woman
  • Place Altadena Middle, school
  • Thing Sharpie, marker
  • Idea or Concept love, trouble
  • Event marathon, concert

There are Four Types of Nouns!
  • 1. Common the name of any person, place, thing,
    idea or event.
  • Examples man, state, religion, day.
  • 2. Proper the name of a particular person,
    place, thing, event, or idea. Every important
    word in a proper noun is capitalized.
  • Examples Mrs. Militello, Virginia,
    Buddhism, Monday.
  • Mrs. Militello, The Hunger Games

Compound Nouns!
  • 3. Compound noun A group of words that name a
    person, place, thing, idea, or event. Some
    compound nouns have hyphens between the words.
    Some are written as one word. Some are written
    as two words.
  • Examples high school, ice cream, classroom

Collective Nouns
  • A group of nouns composed of members animals,
    people, or objects
  • Collective nouns are singular!
  • Examples
  • a PRIDE of lions
  • a CLASS of students
  • a Congregation of people

Concrete and Abstract Nouns
  • Concrete noun a person, place, or thing that is
    tangible. Examples desk, dog, book, tree,
    Mrs. Militello.
  • Abstract noun an idea, quality, or condition.
    Examples love, courtesy, liberty, friendship,
    health.

  • 1. Capitalize names of parts of the country.
  • Example It is hot in the Southeast.
  • However, do not capitalize directional wordsthey
    are common, not proper nouns.

Rules for Capitalizing Titles (proper nouns)
  • Always capitalize the first, last, and main words
    in a title (omit articles and prepositions unless
    theyre the first or last word of a title).
  • When typing, titles should be italicized.
  • When handwriting a title, longer works should be
    underlined.
  • Shorter works should be in quotation marks.
