What is Matter?

• Matter is the stuff that all objects and
  substances in the universe are made of.

• All matter contains a certain amount of material
  (mass)

• Properties are characteristics used to identify
  or classify matter.
• Matter has both physical and chemical properties

• Physical properties are those that can be
  observed without changing the make-up of the
  matter.
• Chemical properties describe matter based on its
  ability to change into a new kind of matter with
  different properties

Physical Properties

• Physical properties are
• Density amount of matter in a given volume
• Ductility ability to be pulled into a thin wire
• Malleability ability to be pressed into a sheet
• Boiling Point temp. at which substance changes
  from a liquid to a gas
• Melting point temp at which substance changes
  from a solid to a liquid
• Electrical Conductivity how conduct electricity
• Solubility ability to dissolve another substance

• Chemical properties are
• Flammability
• Reacts with oxygen
• Reacts with acid

• There are 4 states of matter
• Solid keep its shape and volume
• Liquid
• takes shape of container
• Keeps the same volume, in a container or not
• Can flow
• Gase
• Takes on the shape and volume of its container
• Can flow
• Plasma
• Does not have a definite shape or volume
• Exists only at high temperatures
• Example stars such as sun

• All matter is made up of tiny particles called
  atoms and molecules
• The particles attract each other
• The particles are always in motion, bumping into
  one another.
• The temperature of a substance is related to the
  speed at which the particles move.
