6-mercaptopurine by blocking the reactive thiol

down. It is slowly converted in vivo to

6-thio-inosinic acid, which blocks the pathway of
purine bio-synthesis. Cyclopho-sphamide was
similarly developed as a stable pro-drug, which

phosphoramide mustard, a powerful and unstable
