- SCALABLE ENTERPRISE
- VMware ESX Server Performance on Dual-Core Dell
PowerEdge 2850 Servers - BY TODD MUIRHEAD AND DAVE JAFFE, PH.D.
- Several Dell PowerEdge server models can be
equipped with dual-core Intel Xeon processors.
Dell engineers tested the Dell PowerEdge 2850
server with both single-core and dual-core
processors, and the results showed a 28 to 51
percent performance gain when moving from
single-core to dual-core processors. - Excerpt To determine the benefits of dual-core
processors in a VMware ESX Server softwarebased
virtual computing environment, a team of Dell
engineers tested two Dell PowerEdge 2850 servers,
one equipped with two single-core processors and
another equipped with two dual-core processors.
On these servers, the test team deployed VMware
ESX Server software and created multiple virtual
machines (VMs) to run three different types of
enterprise applications a Microsoft SQL Server
database, the NetBench benchmark (simulating a
file server), and the LAMP (Linux, Apache,
MySQL, PHP) Web platform.

24VMware Infrastructure
- What is it?
- The most widely deployed software suite
- for optimizing and managing IT environments
through virtualization - - from the desktop to the data center
- What is unique?
- Proven in more than 20,000 customers deployments
- Industrys first infrastructure virtualization
suite - Delivering built-in management, distributed
resource optimization, application availability,
operational automation and security. - Fully optimized, rigorously tested and certified
for the widest range of hardware, OS and software
applications.
25ESX Server
Deploy multiple virtual machines on a single
physical server
- What is it?
- Robust, production-proven virtualization layer
that resources into multiple virtual machines - Benefits
- Increase hardware utilization by sharing hardware
resources across a large number of virtual
machines. - Improve service levels to applications
- Delivers the highest levels of performance,
scalability and robustness
26Network Virtualization
Network virtual machines like physical ones
- Build complex networks within an ESX server or
across multiple ESX servers - Virtual NICs with its own IP and MAC address make
virtual machines indistinguishable from physical
machines - NIC Teaming groups 2-10 physical NICs to form a
highly redundant network device - Virtual LANs (VLANs) on top of physical LANs
increase security and balance network traffic
27Virtualization for Storage
Store virtual machine files on shared storage for
greater manageability, flexibility and
availability
- Virtual machines see their own private virtual
disk files - Virtual machine disks can be stored on local or
shared storage - Virtual disks are simply large files that can be
copied, moved, archived and backed up as easily
as any other file.
28New Support for NAS and iSCSI SAN
Extend the benefits of virtualization to cost
sensitive edge environments like remote office
- Extensions for cost-sensitive environments NAS,
iSCSI SAN - VMotion, HA, DRS supported on NAS and iSCSI SAN
29VMFS
VMFS is high performance cluster file system for
virtual machines
- Stores the entire virtual machine state in a
central location - Supports heterogenous storage arrays
- Adds more storage to a VMFS volume dynamically
- Allows multiple ESX Servers to access the same
virtual machine storage concurrently - Enable virtualization-based distributed
infrastructure services
30New - Resource Pools
Aggregate collections of disparate hardware
resources into unified logical resource pools
- Abstraction of resources from hardware
- Failed server means less resources not a failed
application - Flexible hierarchical organization
- Each business unit with its own (virtual)
hardware - Management of an entire SOA application stack as
a single entity
31New Faster, Bigger Virtual Machines
Run the most resource intensive enterprise
applications such as databases, CRM and ERP
applications in a virtual machines
- Expanded memory, storage, network limits up to 4
virtual CPUs per virtual machines - Performance improvements across the board
- Up to 50 better for targeted workloads
32New 4-Way Virtual SMP
Virtualize the most processor intensive
applications
- What does it do?
- Allows single virtual machine to use up to four
physical processors simultaneously - Benefits
- Run resource intensive applications in virtual
machines - Scale computing environments without adding new
hardware - Create realistic development and testing
environments
33Virtual Machine Provisioning and Migration
Provision infrastructure instantly
- Deployment Wizard
- New Redesigned virtual machine templates
- Support easy virtual machine patching and
updating by converting to VMs, powering-on, and
then re-instating as templates - Templates are always stored in a VMFS or NAS (no
longer on VC) - Virtual machine cloning
- Cold migration
- Drag and drop
- Live migration with VMotion
34Vmware VMotion
Migrate running virtual machine from one server
to another
- Zero downtime
- Continuous service availability
- Complete transaction integrity.
- New VMotion support on NAS and iSCSI storage
35New - VMware HA
Cost effective high availability for all servers
- Automatic restart of virtual machines in case of
server failure - No need for dedicated stand-by hardware
- None of the cost and complexity of clustering
X
Resource Pool
36New - VMware DRS
Dynamic and intelligent allocation of hardware
resources to the highest priority virtual
machines to ensure optimal alignment between
business and IT
- Align IT resources with business priorities
- Dynamically allocate resource to virtual
machines. - Dramatically increase system administrator
productivity - Enable system administrators to manage more
resources - Automate hardware maintenance
- Maintenance mode automatically migrates all
virtual machines to other physical servers.
37New - VMware Consolidated Backup
Centralized file level backup
- Move backup out of the virtual machine
- a single agent running on the proxy server rather
than an agent on every virtual machine. - Eliminate backup traffic on the local area
network - Utilize Fibre Channel tape devices for virtual
machine backups - Pre-integrated with major 3rd-party backup
products
38Desktop Initiatives
39What is the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure? (VDI)
- VMwares Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)
- Consolidates and centralizes complete desktop
environments within the data center - Virtualizes, optimizes, and manages server
resources to host and deliver managed desktops
that are always-on and connected - Enables remote, secure and compliant user access
to complete desktop resources
40What are VDIs Key Characteristics?
Centralized Management desktops are
standardized, always connected, always powered on
in the data center facilitating efficient
management
Complete Desktop Access - Remote access to full
desktop environments from anywhere, anytime and
also access multiple environments from the same
device
Resource Optimization Optimize resource
utilization by hosting virtual desktops on shared
servers and through dynamic resource management
Secure Environment / Isolation Secure app
data resources centrally within the datacenter
while ensuring complete user isolation
Flexible Choice Use any (server or client)
hardware running any OS/ App combination while
leveraging existing infrastructure tools
Service-Orientation deliver easy, personalized
