2
Predation
  • Predation is an interaction between species in
which one species uses another species as food.

3
Defense Mechanisms
  • Cryptic coloration
  • Warning coloration
  • Mimicry
  • Batesian
  • Mullerian

4
Cryptic Coloration
  • Coloration that allows an organism to match its
background and hence become less vulnerable to
    predation or recognition by prey.
  • Chameleon
  • Deer
  • Flounder

5
Warning Coloration
  • Conspicuously recognizable markings of an animal
that serve to warn potential predators of the
nuisance or harm that would come from attacking
    or eating it.
  • The bold patterns of skunks
  • bright colors of poison
  • arrow frogs

6
Mimicry
  • Mimicry is the similarity of one species to
another which protects one or both

7
Batesian Mimicry
  • Form of mimicry typified by a situation where a
harmless species has evolved to imitate the
warning signals of a harmful species directed at
    a common predator.

8
Mullerian Mimicry
  • A phenomenon where two or more poisonous or
unpalatable species closely resemble each other
and are therefore avoided equally predators.
  • The Monarch Butterfly and the Viceroy butterfly

9
Co-evolution-Evolution Arms Race-
  • Process by which two or more species evolve in
    response to one another.
  • Prey and predator can become locked in a duel of
    escalating adaptation.
  • Example cheetah and antelope
  • Importance Cheetahs are fast which cause
antelope to become faster in order to survive.

10
Parasitism
  • Relationship between a parasite and a host in
which the parasite depends on the host causing
    minor or severe harm.
  • Example braconid wasps and tomato hornworm
  • or tapeworm inside the intestines

11
Herbivory
  • When an organism feeds on plants
  • Example pests and agricultural crops
