PowerPoint Basics
  • PowerPoint presentation needs structure
  • PowerPoint presentation needs a logical order
  • Slide show should introduce the topic, continue
    with slides containing the concepts, and finish
    with a slide summarizing the presentation
    (lesson)
  • Try to break down your ideas into short, succinct
    sentences and phrases.
  • Think about multimedia enhancements (ie, graphics
    and sounds)
  • Include only those elements that support and
    enhance your main ideas

To View Sample Lessons
  • Go to wikispaces.com
  • Under Favorite Wikis, click on IS 125
  • On left hand side, click on Mathematics
  • Click on Math Agendas
  • Scroll Down to Math Workshops
  • Click on PowerPoint Presentations
  • Open Sample PowerPoint 1
  • Save Presentation to your desktop
  • Double click to open Sample PowerPoint 1 on your
    desktop
  • Move your pointer to Slide Show, click the mouse
    and select View Show in the drop down list by
    clicking it.
  • The slides in the program will advance with a
    mouse click.
  • On the last slide, click the mouse or press ESC
    key to exit the presentation
  • Go to File in the menu bar and select Close to
    exit the sample show.

To View Sample Lessons
  • Return to PowerPoint presentations and open
    PowerPoint Sample 2.
  • Click the hyperlinked (black arrows) to view
    another slide containing additional information
    related to the hyperlinked word or phrase.
  • Click the graphic (a house) in the lower left
    corner to return to the first slide.
  • Go to File in the menu bar and choose Close to
    exit the sample show.

  • Create a New Presentation
  • Choose Blank Presentation
  • Choose Title Slide layout, first slide in box
  • Click Design Button
  • Click Save
  • Choose Desktop
  • Click Add Title
  • Click Add Subtitle
  • Find New Slide in Standard Toolbar
  • Or go to Insert in the menu bar, click it and
    select New Slide
  • Select a slide layout
  • Find Insert in menu bar, select it and then click
    Duplicate Slide
  • Click a slide icon, go to Edit in the menu bar,
    select Delete Slide
  • Default view is Normal View

Text
  • Add a fifth slide to your slide show
  • In the Slide Layout box click on the Blank Slide
    option
  • Move pointer to Drawing Toolbar, locate the Text
    Box button, and select it
  • Type in your text
  • Select and highlight the text, move pointer to
    Font Size box in the Formatting toolbar
  • Click the drop-down arrow and select a larger
    font size
  • Select and highlight the text in the box. Go to
    the Font box in the Formatting toolbar and click
    the drop-down arrow, scroll through the fonts and
    find one you like
  • Add Bold and/or Italic styles if wanted
  • Choose Font colors if wanted

WordArt
  • Move your pointer to the Drawing toolbar, locate
    the Insert WordArt button, and select it
  • Browse through styles, choose one you like, and
    click OK.
  • Edit WordArt Text box appears with highlighted
    text, type title, click OK
  • WordArt Toolbar allows you to make adjustments
  • Edit Text button in toolbar used to change font,
    font size and font styles
  • WordArt Gallery button used to change style
  • Format WordArt button used to select colors
  • Shapes button used to apply various shapes to
    title

Bullets and Numbering
  • Bullets are used to separate thoughts and ideas
  • Numbering, similar organizational tool to
    bullets, accessed through same dialog box as
    bullets
  • Open a Presentation Template
  • Select a slide that contains bullets, highlight
    bulleted or numbered text
  • Go to Format in menu bar and select Bullets and
    Numbering, choose a bullet you like and select it
  • Similar process for adding numbers, click
    numbered tab
  • To delete a number or tab, go to Formatting
    toolbar and click the Bullets and Numbering
    button
  • Can Customize bullets

Polishing Your Presentation
  • Check the alignment and size of all titles
  • Titles should be centered and toward the top of
    the slide
  • Look at placement of other text
  • Compare size of titles and other text
  • Do fonts of title and text match?
  • Examine difference between a short and long
    sentence
  • Assess the colors
  • Check for Spelling and Grammatical errors
  • Preview entire show
  • Save presentation
