In the Beginning
  • The Spanish were the first to transport African
    slaves to the Americas.
  • Slaves were considered property and were used to
    barter with.
  • The strongest and youngest were taken from there
    lands of the Western African Coast.
  • Europeans would buy slaves who were captured
    during rival kingdom wars from the opposing
    tribal chiefs.

Reasons Africans were needed
  • Labor shortage
  • Cheaper than European Slaves
  • Natives were dying quickly
  • Hard work ethic
  • Abundance of supply

American Holocaust
  • Most slaves were stored in factories before
    making the journey to the Americas.
  • The journey came to be known as the Middle
    Passage.
  • Journey took anywhere from 4 to 8 months
    depending on weather conditions.
  • Most ships carried up to 700 slaves.

American Holocaust (cont)
  • Around 8 million slaves died during there
    holding, transportation to and awaiting purchase
    in the Americas.
  • No accurate figures in how many slaves were
    transported to the Americas but estimated to be
    between 15 and 25 million.
  • Slaves endured brutal treatment during their
    journey, many died of torture, famine, and
    disease.

  • Most slaves were brought to South America in
    brazil and worked on Plantations.
  • The slaves were used to produce the largest crop
    from the Americas, sugar.
  • The slave trade became very competitive between
    the European powers.
  • South Africa was one of the few places there was
    a permanent European presence.

  • In 1511 Portugal controlled the Spice Islands
    (Moluccas)
  • English and Dutch came to dominate the Spice
    Trade
  • The Dutch would consolidate all their control
    onto the island of Java
  • Burma, Thailand, and Vietnam were able to resist
    Europeans because of their strong monarchies.

  • The religions of Southeast Asia were changed by
    European influence between 1500 and 1800.
  • Buddhism had many gains in the mainland states
    such as Burma and Vietnam.
  • Dominant form of government in the region was
    monarchy.
