Sentence Types Based on Function
  • Declarative makes a statement and ends in a
    period.
  • Imperative makes a command or request and ends
    in a period. The subject of the imperative
    sentence is you understood.
  • Interrogative asks a question and ends with a
    question mark.
  • Exclamatory makes an exclamation and ends in
    an exclamation point.

  • The Simple Sentence
  • has one subject/predicate pair. The subject
    and/or predicate could be compound.
  • is one independent clause.

    (single subject and predicate pair)
  • Peyton and Hannah might also climb Mt. Everest
    someday. (compound subject)
  • Katie and Jonah read and write with great

  • The Compound Sentence
  • has two independent clauses (AKA simple
    sentences).
  • and clauses are joined by a coordinating
    conjunction, a pair of correlative conjunctions,
    a semicolon, or a colon.

  • Coordinating and correlative conjunctions connect
    two equal parts.
  • Coordinating and, but, or, nor, for, yet

Points to Remember
  • In grammatically correct classroom writing, a
    compound sentence should always have punctuation
    between the two independent clauses.
  • Comma before the coordinating or mid-sentence
    correlative conjunction
  • Semicolon or colon between the clauses
  • Grammatical Faux Pas separating two
    independent clauses with a comma alone unless you
    are a skilled writer breaking the rules on
    purpose.
