Title: Cell Organelles

1
Cell Organelles
  • All the little things inside
  • eukaryotic cells

2
CHLOROPLAST
chloroplasts
structure gt
  • size 4 10 µm
  • function site of photosynthesis
  • occurence cytoplasm of some plant cells

3
Golgi Apparatus
  • Size Variable
  • Function modification and synthesis of chemicals
  • Occurrence free in cytoplasm
  • The name comes from Italian
  • anatomist Camillo Golgi

4
Nucleus
  • Usually only one per cell
  • It is the site of nuclear material the DNA
  • It is 10 micrometres
  • Largest most prominant organelle

5
Ribosomes
  • Proteins are synthesised on ribosomes
  • Free to roam around in cytoplasm.
  • 20 nm in diameter

6
Plasma membrane
  • Also know as cell surface membrane, is a double
layer of phospholipids molecules arranged from
tail to tail acting as a boundary between the
    cell and its environment.
  • It is a complex structure, stunned with protein,
they embed in the membrane or form pores to allow
specific molecules in and out of the cell
  • It is about 7 to 10 nm thick

7
Mitochondria
  • Found in the cytoplasm up to 1000 per cell.
  • They are 1-10 micrometers.
  • They are for aerobic respiration.

8
Centriole
  • Centrioles are structures inside animal cells
which play a part in cell division.
  • Found only in animal cells, these paired
organelles are typically located together near
    the nucleus in the centrosome.
  • The function of a centriole is to form spindle
fibres to separate chromosomes during cell
    division.
  • Centrioles play a role in the mitosis of animal
    cells.
  • A centriole is 1 micrometer

9
Endoplasmic Reticulum
  • Rough endoplasmic reticulum bears the ribosomes
during protein synthesis. The system then sends
the proteins via small vesicles to the Golgi
Complex , or, in the case of membrane proteins,
it inserts them into the membrane
  • Smooth endoplasmic reticulum is found in a
variety of cell types and it serves different
functions in each. It consists of tubules and
vesicles that branch forming a network. In some
cells there are dilated areas like the sacs of
rough endoplasmic reticulum. The network of
    smooth endoplasmic reticulum allows increased
surface area for the action or storage of key
enzymes and the products of these enzymes. In the
case of smooth endoplasmic reticulum in muscle
cells, the vesicles and tubules serve as a store
of calcium which is released as one step in the
contraction process. Calcium pumps serve to move
    the calcium.
