Early Socialization andParenting Styles

  • How and Why do we form attachments to others?
  • American Psychologist Harry Harlow tried to
answer this question by experimenting with rhesus
    monkeys.

3
  • Harlow raised a baby monkey with two surrogate
    monkeys which he made.
  • Both mama monkeys were made of wood and wire.
One of the mothers was covered with soft terry
    cloth.

4
Rhesus Monkeys
5
  • In some cases the terrycloth mother was given a
bottle in other cases the wire mother was given a
    bottle.
  • The baby monkeys overwhelmingly attached to the
cloth monkey whether she had food or not.

6
  • If something frightening were put in the cage the
monkey would run to the cloth mother.
  • Harlow concluded that the monkeys became attached
to the cloth mother because of their need for
    contact or tactile touch.

7
Mary Ainsworth and John Bowlbys experiment in
(1991)
  • Ainsworth and Bowlsby experimented on 1 year olds
to study the development of early emotional
    attachment patterns.

8
  • The experimentwould have mothers of 1 year old
children leave the room , thus leaving their
    child surrounded by strangers.

9
4 types of attachment patterns
  • Ainsworth and Bowlby identified 4 types of
    attachment patterns in young children.

10
  • Secure Attachment- The child will welcome the
mother back after being left with a stranger.
  • Avoidant Attachment the child avoids or ignores
    mom upon her return.
  • Resistant Attachment The child doesnt reject
mom but appears angry that she left.
  • Disorganized- Child act in ways which are a
combination of the other the other types.
