Title: Change in how we think about resources

1
Change in how we think about resources
  • During past forty years a greater appreciation of
    the environment has developed.
  • Today we
  • Recycle
  • Reduce Litter
  • Appreciate the wild environment
  • Have concerns for overfishing, pollution, global
    warming, etc.

3
Change in views
  • How does this old view compare to reality?
  • What other natural resources were once viewed as
    infinite.

4
Change in views
  • How Europeans viewed the resources of the new
world had a large influence on how nations
    managed their natural resources.
  • Name some countries that are European or
developed as a result of European settlement.

5
Sustainability
  • A sustainable system is one that survives,
functions, and is renewed over time.
  • It is a system in which the organisms continue to
live and flourish for many generations.

6
Sustainability
  • In a sustainable ecosystem
  • changes that occur dont cause negative long-term
impacts to any organisms or part of the ecosystem

7
Non-sustainable practices
  • When human activities (e.g., clear cutting, over
fishing, etc) impact a part of the environment or
ecosystem, without allowing it to recover (e.g.,
replanting trees, limiting the number of fish
    harvested) the system will collapse.

8
Paradigm Shift
9
What is a paradigm?
  • Pronounced pair-a-dime
  • A paradigm is a way of looking at the world that
is shared by most people in a community.
  • (see page 116 of text)

10
What is a paradigm shift?
  • A paradigm shift is a rare and significant
change in the way humans view the world.
  • They are major changes which are controversial
when first proposed but eventually come to be
accepted as a major advancement in scientific
    knowledge and understanding.

11
An example of a paradigm shift
  • The change from the belief that the world was
flat and the centre of the universe, to the
belief that the world is round and rotates around
    the sun.

12
Task 1
  • Worksheet

13
  • Many people would say that we are in the midst of
paradigm shift today with regard to how we think
    about the environment.

14
Task 2
  • What evidence is there to support this belief?
What impact would this shift have on the planet
in general and Nova Scotians in particular? Why
might people not want to make this shift?
  • Rubric
  • Evidence to support this belief /2
  • Impact shift would have on planet /2
  • Impact shift would have on Nova Scotians /2
  • Why people might not want to make this shift /2
