The Power of the Popes

• considered Gods representative on earth
• Popes can excommunicate people who disagree w/
  the church
• after the Roman Empire fell, people looked to the
  pope as leader
• Popes became very rich and powerful

• in England, France and the Holy Roman Empire
  kings had great power.
• Holy Roman Empire- this was what was left of
  Charlemagnes empire

The Church Splits

• Eastern European bishops do not listen to the
  pope
• He excommunicates them and they start the Eastern
  Orthodox Church
• called the Great Schism

Conflict Between Popes and Kings

• kings felt that they should be able to appoint
  church officials, such as bishops
• popes felt that they should be the only ones
  allowed
• Pope Gregory VII and Emperor Henry IV argue about
  this and try to kick each other out of power
• later compromises stated that only popes should
  appoint church officials.
