Title: RAID and RAS

1
RAID and RAS
  • CIS 485
  • SAU
  • SUJA
  • SOLOMON
  • TIFFANY
  • STACIE

2
WHY DO WE NEED RAID?
  • Redundant array of independent disk
  • RAID employs the technique of striping
  • Allow overlapped disk I/O across drives
  • To access information from several disks at the
    same time

3
Levels of fault tolerance
  • Level 1
  • Level 2
  • Level 3 -also called duplicating the server
  • - One or more disk putting together
  • -concatenation of several hard disk
  • -RAID array drive

4
Levels of RAID
  • RAID 0
  • RAID 1
  • RAID 4
  • RAID 5
  • RAID 10

5
RAID 0
  • Data blocks are split based on stripe size

6
RAID 1
  • When one hard disk fails , all data is
    immediately available

7
RAID 1 cont.
  • Disk Duplexing

8
RAID 4
  • The controller calculates the parity bit, which
is stored in a separate hard disk

9
RAID 5
  • RAID 5 is similar to RAID 4. it delivers a
    balanced throughput.

10
RAID 10
  • Combination of RAID 0 and 1.

11
Requirements
  • SCSI hard drives
  • RAID Controller board
  • RAID driver

12
Installation procedure
  • Pre Installation
  • boot the server from the RAID software CDROM
  • Create a system disk for the OS
  • Turn off the sever
  • Disconnect the server from power
  • Remove the server cover

13
Installation procedure cont.
  • Zero-channel RAID controller board

14
  • Replace the riser board, with the RAID controller
    board in it
  • Power on the server and press ltCtrlgt ltGgt

  • RAS Remote Access Server
  • The ability to get access to a computer or a
    network from a remote distance
