Title: The church that getting ready for action.

1
The church that getting ready for action.
  • A pattern of the way things happen in such a
    church

2
  • It can start with a single person
  • In this case his name is Barnabas

3
Background on Barnabas
  • His name means son of encouragement
  • To those in the 1st century the word son meant
that you had the attributes of the father.
  • Jesus Son of God Jesus has the attributes of
    God.
  • In Matthew the High Priest asked Jesus if He was
the Son of God. Based on His reply He was put
    to death.

4
Barnabas the man behind the work of Paul
  • To say Barnabas is the son of encouragement, is
to say that had encouragement was his out
    standing foremost trait
  • It is like saying that this mans father was
encouragement and being his son, well its like
    father like son

5
Barnabas
  • Barnabas was likely well know in the church as he
is one of whom it is said that he sold his ?????
    AGROS (farm)
  • Acts 245 Christians sold their possessions and
goods (those who had come from other places to
    the feast?)

6
When everyone else was afraid
  • Barnabas embraced Saul (Paul) after his
    conversion
  • Acts 926,27 When he came to Jerusalem, he was
trying to associate with the disciples fnbut
they were all afraid of him, not believing that
he was a disciple. But Barnabas took hold of him
and brought him to the apostles and described to
them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and
that He had talked to him, and how at Damascus he
had spoken out boldly in the name of Jesus.

7
Barnabas is leadership applied
  • He just does it He is not going to stand around
and wait to see what others are going to do
  • His model of how to approach like does not spring
from others - but from God!
  • That does not cause him to abuse others, remember
    his name Son of encouragement!

8
Antioch is a church connected to God
  • Peter had gone to house of Cornelius in Caesarea
where it was confirmed to him that good news of
Jesus (the gospel) was for all
  • The news that there were a great number of
converts in Antioch reached the church in
    Jerusalem
  • They sent Barnabas up there, he finds a lot of
    converts (gentiles)
  • He encourages them

9
Barnabas full of the Holy Spirit
  • Acts 1122ff Then when he arrived and witnessed
the grace of God, he rejoiced and began to
encourage them all with resolute heart to remain
true to the Lord for he was a good man, and full
of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And considerable
numbers were brought to the Lord. And he left for
    Tarsus to look for Saul

10
Then he figures, we need and Saul
  • Acts 1126 and when he (Barnabas) had found him
(Saul), he brought him to Antioch. And for an
entire year they met with the church and taught
considerable numbers and the disciples were
    first called Christians in Antioch.
  • Luke includes that the church in Antioch sent
help to the church in Jerusalem by the hands of
Barnabas and Saul That become the first mission
    of Barnabas and Saul

11
After the Herod serves himself to the worms
  • Acts 1225 We return right back to Barnabas and
Saul completing their first mission Taking help
from the Gentiles to the Jews
  • Mark Joins them 1225
  • Acts 131 Now there were at Antioch, in the
church that was there, prophets and teachers
Barnabas, and Simeon who was called Niger, (???e?
    - black) and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen who had
been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

12
Antioch was a church of dedicated worship
  • Acts 132,3 While they were ministering
(?e?t?????? leitourgeo worship that costs you
something e.g. effort, sacrifice) to the Lord and
fasting, the Holy Spirit said, Set apart for Me
Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have
called them. Then, when they had fasted and
prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent
    them away.

13
Worship that costs
  • 2 Peter 110ff Therefore, brethren, be all the
more diligent to make certain about His calling
and choosing you for as long as you practice
these things, you will never stumble for in this
way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly
    supplied to you.
  • Dedication to worship corresponds to what you get
    out of it
  • Put in more more blessing is the result the
    result is multiplied

14
There is good reason for the NT details of the
church
  • There is more here than the first Missionary trip
    of Paul
  • There is the dedicated pattern of worship in the
    church
  • Note there is no emphasis on the material
elements of getting the worship done, like
where they sat, what songbook they used could
they do this or that in worship?Luke wants us to
know that they were fasting and prayingdedicated
    worship!

15
Worship
  • Sincere worship
  • Dedicated worship
  • Focused worship
  • Disciplined worship
  • It was Worship that God honored While they were
ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy
Spirit said, Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul
for the work to which I have called them.

16
Then
  • Acts 133 Then, when they had fasted and prayed
and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

17
How were they sent?
  • Acts 134 So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit,
they went down to Seleucia and from there they
    sailed to Cyprus.

18
The NT pattern of people God will use
  • Barnabas He has a heart for his brothers and
sisters that compels him to sell his farm and
    give the proceeds to work
  • Barnabas is a person of faith when other are
pulling back in fear of Saul he steps forward
  • Barnabas is willing to work meeting with the
church for a year before they do anything out
side of that congregation Acts 1126

19
Barnabas and Paul are driven
  • By their connection to God through Jesus Christ
  • They are willing to go and preach and teach with
all the uncertainty and suffering that will bring
  • It was the love of God that gave them motivation

20
Gods love
  • For his temple Acts 2028
  • For His lost sheep John 316
