Title: Chemistry: An Introduction

1
Chapter 1
  • Chemistry An Introduction

2
What are these?
3
Why Study Chemistry?
  • Everything you can touch or taste or smell is a
    chemical
  • When you study chemistry, you come to understand
a bit about how things work.
  • An explanation for everyday things, like why
laundry detergent works better in hot water or
how baking soda works or why not all pain
relievers work equally well on a headache.

4
What Fields of Study Use Chemistry?
  • You could use chemistry in most fields, but it's
commonly seen in the sciences and in medicine.
  • Chemists, physicists, biologists, and engineers
    study chemistry.
  • Science teachers study chemistry. Fire fighters
and people who make fireworks learn about
    chemistry.
  • So do truck drivers, plumbers, artists,
hairdressers, chefs... the list is extensive.

5
1.3 Solving Problems Using a Scientific Approach
  • Its 830 A.M on Friday. Which is the best way
to drive to school to avoid traffic congestion?
  • You have two tests on Monday. Should you divide
your study time quality or allot more time to one
    than to the other?

6
1.3 Solving Problems Using a Scientific Approach
  • Making an observation
  • Recognize the problem and state it clearly
  • Quantitative or Qualitative
  • Formulating a hypothesis
  • Propose possible solutions and possible
    explanation
  • Performing an experiment
  • Decide which of the solutions is the best or
decide whether the explanation proposed is
    reasonable.

7
1.4 Scientific Method
  • Theory (model) is a set of tested hypotheses
that gives an overall explanation of some part of
    nature.
  • Explain why it happens
  • Can be changed as more information are become
    more available
  • Law a summary of observed behavior

8
Various Parts of the Scientific Method
9
Learning Chemistry
  • Learn another language
  • Trials and errors
  • Recognize mistakes and learn from mistakes
