• Evolution, or change over time, is the process by
  which modern organisms have descended from
  ancient organisms.

• Scientists have accumulated a great deal of
  evidence that organisms alive today have been
  produced by a long process of change over time.

• Evolution occurs because 1) species tend to
  increase their numbers over time 2) the genetic
  make-up of organisms change over time 3)
  resources are often limited in the environment
  and

5

• 4) the selection of the environment of those
  offspring better able to survive and leave
  offspring. (This is called natural selection or
  survival of the fittest.)

• Natural selection provides an explanation for the
  current fossil record and the similarities in DNA
  among different organisms.
• Evolutionary relationships are used to help
  classify organisms into groups and subgroups.

  important theory concerning evolution in the
