Title: Muscle Fatigue and Energy Needs

1
Muscle Fatigue and Energy Needs
2
Energy Pathways - Aerobic and Anaerobic
Metabolism
  • Aerobic- is an adjective that means "requiring
air", where "air" usually means oxygen
  • Anaerobic - is an adjective word which literally
means without air (where "air" is generally used
to mean oxygen), as opposed to aerobic.

3
Energy Pathways - Aerobic and Anaerobic Metabolism
  • These two types of metabolism are used in
    different ways.
  • If the body is working intensely and using a lot
of energy over a short amount of time the
    Anaerobic path way is used
  • If the body is working over long periods of time
the Aerobic path way is used.

4
ATP
  • ATP is the energy source which the body uses to
    fuel movement
  • This made in two ways
  • During Aerobic work ATP is created with Oxygen
    from blood
  • During Anaerobic work blood can not get to the
muscles fast enough so ATP is created with out
oxygen (this however can not be sustained over
    long periods of time).

5
Conditioning
  • One can train or condition the body to use these
different pathways better or more effectively
  • Ex. Long distance running
  • Ex. Weight Lifter

6
Blood transfusions
  • Often times athletes will undergo blood
transfusions. With what you learned from this
class how would this be helpful to them?
