3-Part Process

• Focus, Topic Sentence, Evidence (quotes,
  paraphrasing)
• Step 1 Focus
• How does this relate to the thesis?
• Step 2 Topic Sentence
• This should account for the CONSEQUENCE of the
  focus
• Step 3 Quote (evidence)
• The outside sources! Use your quote to PROVE
  your thesis and paragraph focus.

• Step 2 Topic Sentence
• This should account for the CONSEQUENCE of the
  focus
• The topic sentence is not a complete sentence
  that merely states a word or phrase it is a part
  of the argument (we need to know the effects.)
• Be sure this is at the beginning of your
  paragraph. This was the reader understands the
  direction you are going and how it relates to the
  rest of your paper. Introducing at the
  beginning also makes it easier to support your
  argument throughout the paragraph).

• Quote (evidence)
• DO NOT GIVE A SUMMARIZING QUOTE.
• -Quotes are meant to be the prove. If we can
  easily look up the process ourselves or it can
  easily be paraphrased, DO NOT USE A DIRECT
  QUOTATION.
• -A quote is meant to tell us something we do
  NOT yet know it is the consequence. Use it to
  prove your claim not summarize the topic
  sentence.
• REMEMBER quotes are not always necessary. If
  it can simply be paraphrased, then paraphrase!
  (We know when you are using a quote just to
  lengthen your paper )).

Try it!

• Go through each paragraph and identify your
  FOCUS, TOPIC SENTENCE, AND QUOTE (EVIDENCE)
• Write each down.
• After your focus, write down how it relates to
  your thesis.
• After your topic sentence, write down what the
  implications are AND how it relates to your
  thesis.
• After your evidence, write down how it pertains
  to all three topic sentence, paragraph focus,
  and thesis
• This is the time to make sure each paragraph
  has a SINGLE focus!
