Title: 26th Operational-MIRS Meeting

1
26th Operational-MIRS Meeting
  • March 20th 2009
  • S.-A. Boukabara

2
Agenda
  • Overview Status of MiRS / NOAA-19 Status Sid
  • MiRS Operational Status OSDPD
  • MiRS/N19 for Core products  Kevin
  • MiRS/N19 for Snow and Ice properties Chris
  • MiRS/N19 for Rainfall Rate Flavio
  • MiRS Improvement to Rainfall Rate Using MM5
    RuiYue
  • Status/Update on MiRS for FY-3 MWRI
    Tiger
  • System/Web site updates / level-III data
    Wanchun
  • Discussions All

3
MiRS SPSRB briefing
  • MiRS (build 4, delivered on December 15th 2008)
was briefed to SPSRB on March 18th. Green light
granted. Congrats to the whole team (STAR and
    OSDPD!)

4
MiRS Status
  • Improvements being made to improve RR using MM5,
TRMM and CPC (depart from MSPPS training)
  • Improvement to Bias computation and monitoring
  • Expansion of MiRS to FY MWRI sensor as well as
    MWTS, MWHS
  • Improvements being made F16 RR (Noise tuning)
  • Improvements being made to surface properties
  • MiRS/NDE collaboration seems to be on good
footage. Kevin attending all meetings and
starting to implement MiRS within NDE/DHS next
    week (PCF and PSF tested).
  • Bill Blackwell from MIT/LL visited on March 17th.
Collaboration on ATMS proxy data and FM is
    ongoing. Efforts will be leveraged.

5
MiRS/N19 Overview
  • N19 performances assessed against several
reference data RAOBs, ECMWF, HIRS, GDAS, CPC
rain gauges, CloudSAT, AMSR-E, TRMM, etc
  • Results from NOAA-19 performance assessments
suggest N19 is ready to become operational
    (comparable performances as N18).
  • N18 vs N19 comparisons suggest N18 and N19
    products are consistent
  • - Today, we start transitioning the
delta-package of MiRS to OSDPD for operational
    processing of N19, (on schedule)
  • Monitoring, fine-tuning of bias, RTM uncertainty,
    etc will continue until L90
  • No major problems found convergence, QC, etc

6
Data Quality Monitoring
Convergence rate /N19
Convergence rate /N18
Thresholds triggering warning messages
Bad-Data Rate /N19
Bad-Data Rate /N18
7
Issues previously reported (Now fixed)
N19 Iterations (before Biasrtm uncertainty
tuning)
N18 Iterations (operational)
N19 Iterations (AFTER Biasrtm uncertainty
tuning)
8
Upcoming
  • Efforts will be spent to expand MiRS to GeoSTAR
    (Geostationary Microwave sensor)
  • Request for collaboration by MIT was made to use
    MiRS for NAST/M aircraft measurements.
