Heat Illnesses (Hyperthermia)
  • Heat rash
  • Sunburn
  • Heat cramps
  • Heat exhaustion
  • Heat stroke

Heat Rash
  • Prickly red or pink rash found on body usually in
    areas covered by clothing
  • Can be caused by blocked sweat glands
  • Tiny pimples or dots may form
  • Watch for pain swelling or redness
  • Treatment loosen clothing, dry area an place in
    cool dry shady spot

Heat Cramps
  • Painful involuntary muscle spams usually from
    heavy exercise of hot environments. May be
    prolonged
  • Inadequate fluid intake may often contribute to
    heat cramps

Treatment
  • If you suspect heat cramps
  • Rest briefly and cool down
  • Drink clear juice or an electrolyte-containing
    sports drink
  • Practice gentle, range-of-motion stretching and
    gentle massage of the affected muscle group

  • Don't resume strenuous activity for several hours
    or longer after heat cramps go away
  • Call your doctor if your cramps don't go away
    within one hour or so

Heat Exhaustion
  • More serious than heat cramps
  • Caused by depletion of salt/water due to
  • Intense prolonged exercise
  • Gradual dehydration
  • Symptoms
  • Painful heat cramps
  • Heavy sweating
  • Fast/weak pulse shallow breathing
  • Dizziness, headache, nausea
  • Vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Can progress to heat stroke

Treatment
  • Help the casualty to a cool place
  • Get them to lie down with their legs raised
  • Give them plenty of water
  • Follow if possible with a weak salt solution
    - gator aid a drink with electrolytes

  • Even if the casualty recovers quickly, ensure
    that they see a doctor
  • If the casualtys responses deteriorate place
    them into the recovery position and dial 999 or
    112 for an ambulance
  • Monitor and record any vital signs breathing,
    the level of response and pulse rate
  • Be prepared to give rescue breaths and chest
    compressions if necessary.

Heat Stroke
  • Body becomes unable to regulate itself sweating
    mechanism fails core body temperature rises
  • IMMEDIATE attention required... body temperature
    can rise to 40celcius in 10-15 min.
  • May be caused from ecstasy drug
  • Symptoms
  • Very high body temperature
  • Red, hot skin
  • Rapid strong pulse
  • Throbbing headache
  • Confusion altered mental state
  • Dizziness, nausea, vomiting
  • Unconsciousness

Treatment
  • You need to quickly move the casualty to a cool
    place and remove as much of the outer clothing as
    possible. Call 911
  • Fan and spray water, or keep a cold wet cloth on
    the victim. When temp drops below 38 degrees
    celsius replace wet towl or sheet with dry one
  • Always monitor vitals and give rescue breaths and
    compressions if neccesary

Hypothermia
  • Symptoms
  • Body temp falls below 35 degrees celsius
  • Severe hypthermia is when core temp is below 30
    degrees celsius
  • shivering and pale, cold, dry skin
  • disorientation, apathy or irrational behaviour
    occasionally belligerence

Symptoms continues
  • impaired consciousness or lethargy
  • slow and shallow breathing
  • slow and weakening pulse
  • in extreme cases the heart may stop.

Treatment
  • Make sure the casualty gets dry and sheltered
    from the wind.
  • Prevent further heat loss with blankets, body
    warmth if needed and if conscious give warm
    drink.
  • Call 911
