    Latins build original settlement.
  • Etruscans were from Northern Italy and
    influenced the development of Roman civilization
  • Last king of Rome Tarquin the Proud. Driven
    from power in 509 BC.
  • Romans establisha Republic.

  • citizenship granted to free-born male
    landowners
  • Patricians wealthy landowners
  • Plebeians commoners farmers, artisans,
    merchants made up majority of population
  • Plebeians could not hold most govt positions
    but could elect tribunes, who represented them
    and protected their rights
  • Creation of written law code- Twelve Tables
    (451 BC)
  • 2 Consuls-commanded the army and directed govt.
    1 year term. Could veto each other.
  • Senate 300 members (aristocrats), Plebeians
    were eventually allowed.

  • The Roman Army- all landowning citizens
    required to serve organized into legions (5000
    foot soldiers), supported by cavalry legions
    divided into groups of 80 men called centuries
  • by 265 BC all of Italy controlled by Rome
  • Romes policy toward defeated peoples
  • Punic Wars- between 264 and 146 BC 3 wars
    between Rome and Carthage
