  • Unit 5 Now and Then
  • Week 2 Day 4

Extend the Theme
Focus Question What are communities like today?
Theme Question How do communities change, and
how do they stay the same?
Now you know more about people in the past
and the present. Lets share what we know from
other texts, family stories, and things weve
seen. I can share something I read about our
town in the past. Every day when the sun started
to set, one person lit the oil or gas in each
streetlight. Our electric streetlights today
dont need all that work.

sort them in the correct place on the timeline?

Comprehension Strategy Monitor
  • Why do readers monitor comprehension?
  • This requires us to think about how we are
reading. What strategies do you use to monitor
    your comprehension?

I can make the inference that started small
refers to Fresnos size before more people moved
there.
After reading this page, Im not sure I
understand what started small means. I will
summarize the first paragraph to help.
Fresno started out as a train station and then
grew as people moved there.
5
Use Text Evidence
You can use different strategies to find text
evidence. Lets see if we can find answers to
our Theme Question. Paying attention is a sure
way of knowing what is going on in the story.
Pages Question Text Evidence
18-19 How do communities change, and how do they stay the same? The text explains how Addams helped people by starting a community center. I think that is a change. I will write Addams changed her community as my statement, by starting a community as text evidence.

    the topic
  • Has a conclusion that sums up the major points
and leaves the reader with something to think
    about.

The Telephone By Jenna Williams Who
invented the telephone? In the early 1870s
Alexander Graham Bell had an idea for the
telephone. He was experimenting with electricity.
He believed he could send the human voice over
wires. He got his friend Thomas A. Watson to
help. They spent a long time experimenting. In
1876 they discovered how to do it. People were
amazed by Bells invention. Years later
business people had private lines connecting
their homes and offices. The Bell Telephone
Company was born. Bell predicted that in the
future, wires would connect cities and people
would talk to each other across the country.
Bells prediction was correct. In a few years,
nearby cities were connected by telephone lines.
By 1892, the cities of New York and Chicago were
connected. By 1915 telephone lines stretched
across the country. Nearly 100 years after
Bell invented the telephone, Martin Cooper
invented the cell phone in 1973. Cell phones do
not use wires. They send the sound through the
air. The telephone changed peoples lives.
Today there are different kinds of telephones.
They let us talk to people anywhere. We can use
them almost anytime. What changes to the
telephone will the future bring?
