In the Beginning

• Came to Glasgow as a student in 1965
• Graduated B.Sc (Hons) Chemistry - 1969
• Graduated Ph.D - 1973
• Post Doctoral studies in Cell Biology - 1973
• Joined CS as Programmer 1974
• User services operating systems
• Univac EXEC 8, IBM OS360, KDF9 (EGTRAN), ICL
  GEORGE 3 /4 and EMAS
• Basically Roger has been at Glasgow man and boy
  since 1965

• Mainframes were King
• Systems Support (SS) were the elite
• Applications support annoyed Systems by playing
  with their toys
• Network support were OK! Since they generally
  stopped users accessing The Mainframes anyway
• Users Well they were users

• Pat Moran - Der Führer
• SS (ICL) Hardware/Software Engineers

• Roger the new SS-Der Führer - from 1982
• Promoted to Division head in 1984
• Roger (Smiley) Mackenzie Spycatcher - 1988
• Should have joined CS Directorate - 1990
• Demise of the Mainframes from 1993
• Big void for the SS many had left or were
  leaving
• NLM Bob says Sunny go and play with Bill
• And so he did! Enjoying peaceful days,
  friendships with Brian and Aileen and learning
  new languages German, Spanish and of course MS
  speak TCO, ROI and the like
