Active Transport

Review!
  • Passive Transport
  • From high to low concenration
  • Does not require energy from the cell
  • Diffusion
  • Osmosis
  • Facilitated diffusion
  • Active Transport
  • From low to high concentration
  • Requires energy from the cell
  • Active transport proteins
  • Endocytosis
  • Exocytosis

3
Active transport
  • is an energy-requiring process that moves
    material across a cell membrane.
  • The cell uses active transport in three
    situations
  • 1. When a particle is going from low to high
    concentration
  • 2. When particles need help entering the
membrane because they cant cross the
membrane (it is impermeable to the molecule.)
  • 3. When very large particles need to enter or
    exit the cell

4
Active Transport Proteins
  • Use chemical energy from the cell to change their
shape and allow substances to pass through the
    membrane

5
ENDOCYTOSIS
  • Cells surround and takes in material from the
environment forming a vesicle or vacuole.
  • Includes pinocytosis and phagocytosis

6
Pinocytosis
  • Water and dissolved substances are taken up by
    the cell
  • cell drinking

7
Phagocytosis
  • Up take of large particles by cells

8
EXOCYTOSIS
  • Vesicles fuse with the plasma membrane and
release material on the outside of a cell.
