Title: Active and Passive

1
Active and Passive Transport
2
Diffusion
3
Diffusion
  • Diffusion- movement of any molecule from an area
of high concentration to a low concentration
  • This is a form of passive transportation
  • Passive transportation- Transportation of
    materials without using energy

4
Osmosis
5
Osmosis
  • Osmosis is a form of passive transport
  • the movement of water molecules from an area of
high concentration to an area of low
    concentration.
  • This is ONLY done with water

6
Hypertonic Solutions
  • Hypertonic solutions-contain a high concentration
of a substance that is not water (e.g. the
    cell's cytoplasm).
  • When a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution,
the water moves out of the cell, causing the cell
    to shrivel.

Isotonic Solution
  • Isotonic Solutions-contain the same concentration
of water inside the membrane as outside the
    membrane
  • When a cell is placed in an isotonic solution,
the water diffuses into and out of the cell at
    the same rate.

Hypotonic Solution
  • Hypotonic solution- contain a lower concentration
of the solute and a higher amount of water
  • When a cell is placed in a hypotonic solution,
the water diffuses into the cell, causing the
cell to swell and possibly explode.

Active Transport
  • Active transport- movement of molecules from high
concentrations to an area of low concentration
and must have energy to do this

23
Questions
  • What is the difference in active and passive
    transport?
  • What kind of solution may cause a cell to burst?
  • What is the name of the transportation that
    involves water?

24
Questions
  • True or False- Active transport requires energy.
  • What kind of solution causes a cell to shrink?
  • What kind of transportation can transport any
    kind of substance?

25
Questions
  • What is hypotonic solution?
  • What kind of solution brings in as much water as
    it pushes out?
  • What is a hypertonic solution?
  • What is passive transportation?
