Elements
  • The elements, alone or in combinations, make up
our bodies, our world, our sun, and in fact, the
    entire universe.

5
Elements
  • Science has come along way since Aristotles
theory of Air, Water, Fire, and Earth.
  • Scientists have identified 90 naturally occurring
elements, and created about 28 others.

6
The most abundant element in the earths crust is
oxygen.
7
What is the purpose of the Periodic Table?
  • Early chemists working throughout the world,
speaking different languages, wanted to tell each
    other about their discoveries.
  • They needed a way to write about the elements,
compounds and chemical reactions so that all
    scientists could understand.
  • For this reason, the periodic table was
    developed.

8
Pre Periodic Table
  • Before the periodic table was created there was
    no organization to Chemistry!
  • Imagine a grocery store with no organization!
  • Chemistry didnt make sense!

9
History of the Periodic Table
  • Dmitri Mendeleev organized the periodic table in
1869 when there were only 63 elements.
  • He organized each of the elements according to
    their atomic masses.
  • As new elements were discovered they fit into
Mendeleevs basic framework for the periodic
    table.

10
The Elements
  • The periodic Table gives a list of all of the
    different kinds of elements.
  • Each element is unique and arranged in a specific
    way.
