Title: Chapter One:
1SCIENTIFIC NOTATION a convenient way of writing
very large (positive numbers of 10) or small
(negative values of 10) made up of a number
from 1-9 plus a decimal, multiplied by a power of
10. Ex 2.9 x 107 or 6.0 x 10-5 29 000 000
2.9 x 107 or 0.000060 6.0 x 10-5 1
2 Using Scientific Notation Very easy When
you are dividing two numbers with powers of ten,
you subtract the powers of ten. When you are
multiplying numbers with powers of ten, you add
the powers of ten. 2
3EX DIVIDING 4.5 x 1012 3.0 x 108 1.5 x
1012-8 (the top power of ten always goes first
12 8) 1.5 x 104 Proof 4 500 000 000 000
15 000 1.5 x 104 3 00 000 000 (you
move the decimal 5 places to the left in order to
make 15 000 1.5) 3
4MULTIPLYING (2 x 104 ) (4 x 103 ) 8 x
1043 8 x 107 Proof 20000 x 4000 8 0
000 000 8 x 107 4
