Academic VocabularyMathematics

2
ACUTE An angle whose measure is greater than
zero degrees but less than 90 degrees
3
Face of a polyhedron- A polygon that is a flat
surface of a solid figure
4
Composite- A whole number that has more than two
factors
9 is a composite number since its factors are 1,
3, and 9.
5
Equation- A number sentence which shows that two
quantities are equal
6
Expression- A part of a number sentence that
combines numbers and operation signs but does not
have an equal sign
7
Vertex-The points where the rays of an angle, the
sides of a polygon, or the edges of a polyhedron
meet
8
Obtuse- An angle whose measure is greater than 90
degrees but less than 180 degrees
9
Ordered Pairs- A pair of numbers used to locate a
point on a coordinate plane the first number
tells how far to move horizontally and the second
number tells how far to move vertically
10
Coordinate system-A plane formed by two
perpendicular axes (the horizontal x-axis and the
vertical y-axis) which intersect at a point
called the origin. An ordered pair is uniquely
determined by its horizontal and vertical
distance from the origin
11
Improper Fraction- A fraction whose numerator is
greater than or equal to its denominator. An
improper fractions value is greater than or
equal to one
12
Proper Fraction- fractions less than one the
numerator is less than the denominator
13
Mixed Numeral-A number that is written using both
a whole number and a fraction
14
Common Fraction-A fraction having an integer as a
numerator and an integer as a denominator.
15
Tiling/Tessellation- A collection of plane
figures that fill the plane with no overlap and
no gaps
16
Diameter- A line segment that passes through the
center of a circle and has its endpoints on the
circle
17
Right-An angle with a measure of 90
18
Accuracy- The quality of being near to a true
value
19
Chance- The likelihood that a particular outcome
will occur
20
Computation- The procedure of calculating
determining by mathematical methods
21
Convert- To change into another form
  • ½ .50 50

22
Function Table- A way of showing the relationship
of numbers before and after a rule is applied
x y
0 2

2 6
y x 2
23
Inverse Operation-Operations that undo each
other. Addition and subtraction are inverse
operations. Multiplication and division are
inverse operations.

24
Measures of Central Tendency- (mean, median,
mode)- Median The middle value in a set of data
when the data are listed in order from smallest
to largest. If there is an even number of data
points, the median is the mean of the two middle
values. Mode The value or values that occur
most often in a set of data.
25
Pattern Rules- Things that are arranged following
a rule or rules.
26
Prime-A whole number greater than 1 that has
only two factors 1 and itself
27
Probability- A number from 0 to 1 that tells the
chance that an event will happen. The closer a
probability is to 1 the more likely the event is
to happen.
Probability of red
28
Quadrant- One of four sections on the coordinate
plane formed by the x- and y-axis.
29
Radius- A line segment with one endpoint at the
center of a circle and the other endpoint on the
circle
30
Range- The difference between the greatest number
and the least number in a set of data
31
Relationship- a connection or related
  • How is (equation)
  • related to
  • ì (inequality)?

32
Reminder- An amount left over when one number is
divided by another number.
33
Scale- The numbers along a side of a bar graph
34
Square Unit- A square with a side length of one
unit used to measure area
1 square unit
35
Stem and Leaf Plot- A way to show data by using
two columns separated by a vertical line so that
the left column shows the stem and the right
column shows the leaves.
